    Mareks???

Ok I have a sick roo. Started with one leg seeming to bother him. I checked him out and he had a bad spot on his foot ... thought bumblefoot but he was still getting around. Then his foot got better but then he was holding out his other leg. He could not get up into the coop for food and water...

    turkey hatching experts

So I am incubating turkey eggs for the first time. They were suppose to hatch next Thursday but the momma turkey had sat on them a bit so last night when I went to turn them I had a pip. It surprised me! Anyway I am worried because the humidity was in the 40s and the membrane looks dried out. It...

    Brower incubator help needed!

My neighbor called me over the other day and said that he had an incubator to give me. I took it and said thanks! I have a styrofoam LG. Now I have a round metal Brower. So he did hatch in it a LONG time ago. It is dirty and there were even shell bits still in it. Any tips on how best to clean...

Day 21 and my 3 eggs are doing nothing!

Ok today is day 21. I need u guys to stop me from doing something stupid .... like candling the eggs tonight. Right? I should just wait it out???? Maybe I am asking the wrong people! lol! Anyway it is just 3 eggs. We started out with almost 30 but 7 were quail. Only 2 quail hatched but they were...

How do you handle a staggered hatch with dry incubation?

So I set quail eggs and chicken eggs together. The quail eggs will hatch about 3 days earlier than the chicken eggs. I am suppose to add water for lockdown for the chickens then. Do I do it earlier for the quail eggs? Will this potentially drown the chickens? Should I just not worry about...

Anyone have tips for candling quail eggs?

I have some quail eggs in the bator for the first time. Their shells are dark and small so it is hard to see in them. Just wondering if anyone knew a trick?

How many bantams can fit in my A frame?

I just built an A frame tractor that is light enough to move often on my 3 acre property. It is approximately 4x8. How many bantams can I reasonably fit in it?

8 week old seems to have a cold

So this morning my boys noticed that my 8 week old bantam d'uccle was making funny sounds. I observed but she was behaving fine. She was sneezing. Now her wheeze is much worse and it is the most pathetic little sound but she still acts normal. I don't have any antibiotic but I think I can pick...

    Mites?

So I got a new silkie cochin mix today. It was from a friend. My son said he saw a bug crawling on the bird and that there were bugs on him after holding her. Sure enough I had them on me too. They are very small and somewhat reddish brown. I am new to all this chicken stuff. My friend did not...

Chickens attacked by dogs--what should I do for injured ones?

OK my chickens were free ranging and one of the neighborhood dogs along with mine unfortunately got a hold of them. Killed my favorite OF COURSE! I have two hurt ones. I don't know what to do for them. I put them in my brooder. They are panting and not moving. I gave them water. Should I leave...

    Chicks vibrating

So when I pick my bantam babies up they seem to be vibrating. This is my second hatch of a bunch of chicks(I have 8 so that is a bunch for me) and I don't remember the first ones vibrating like this. We are wondering if this is like purring????

Can you handle a baby too much?

I have some day old bantam chicks. I decided my last batch of 10 really did not bond with us and that we should spend more time with these babies. Then I started to get worried that maybe we were stressing them out by picking them up. They chirp a lot when we are holding them rather than their...

Newly hatched babies pecking at each other

I have 8 babies. My last hatch of lf I had 10 babies and they were fine(no real fighting and I think I have 7 out of 10 roosters!). This hatch is bantams and they are constantly pecking at each other and eating feathers. There is one that seems to get picked on the most and seems to always be in...

What do you use for your tractor floor?

So my tractor is pretty big and heavy already. We can move it but it is hard. We are using pine pellets right now which I like except for the price. We change them out every two weeks and that is $12 every two weeks. If we used sand it would probably make it impossible to move with the weight of...

Trouble getting the birds to go in at night!

So we installed an automatic Chicken Pullet door last week. The chickens are still not all going in before the door closes so we have to open it back up and make them go in. Any hints for what we can do to get them to go in? We have it set around 8:30. Thanks!

My BLRW and my BR (8 weeks)

OK so I tried to hatch my chicks and ended up with only one live BR(my baby) so I then bought a baby blrw from a friend to be a friend to the br. Well here are some pictures. For the first 6 weeks the blrw had no sign of a comb or wattle so when it grew them around 6 weeks I was not too...

Finishing our coop with a few questions ... what for the bottom of coop???

OK so we are getting close to being done with the coop. We need to decide if we are going to use sand in the bottom or pine shavings or something else? Also I was thinking of buying plastic trays to go under the roosts--anyone have a good place they buy their trays from? Everything I find...

10 sq ft/bird for Run even if it is a tractor?

So we plan to move our coop every few days. Right now we have 12 birds but they are babies and we will not be keeping the roos so I am not sure how many we will end up with but let us say 10(optimistically thinking!). So our coop is 4'x7' and the run is 8'x7' and there will also be the space...
