Vegetarians ( and Vegans ) Thread!!!

What a cool website! Great photos, fun captions - just for that I wish we hadn't just stocked up on soap. I think I'll remember you when we need some again or when I need a birthday gift. It is too bad you are all the way across the country; shipping charges will probably be pretty serious.

Vegetarians ( and Vegans ) Thread!!!

Daiya Mozzarella style shreds is the best we've found - but keep in mind that most of them are really, really bad! I developed a taste for that one fairly quickly. And it does melt. Earth Fare and Whole Foods carry it.

Vegetarians ( and Vegans ) Thread!!!

Oh dear! Looking at that post and your avatar, Kevin 565 - did your cat eat your fishes? (I agree, by the way, that some animals need to eat meat - and we are still watching the dogs very closely for signs of deficiencies. But so far, so good.)

Vegetarians ( and Vegans ) Thread!!!

Natural Balance makes a vegan dog food. (It is called vegetarian on the bag, but is actually vegan.) Our dogs have been on it for a long time and have not had any issues. Before that, when our kids were small and I wasn't working, I made the dog food, using our chickens' eggs for protein. But...

Old Fashioned Broody Hen Hatch A Long and Informational Thread

I guess you can't let the pullet out once her mama's/buddy's eggs hatch? Maybe put in a separation and watch her for a few hours? (I suspect mama will tell her in no uncertain terms to leave the chicks alone and she will oblige. She might even help raise them. But I'd separate them anyway, at...

Old Fashioned Broody Hen Hatch A Long and Informational Thread

I agree the supplement is a good idea. Also have food and water near her and monitor her to make sure she is actually eating. (It doesn't take much, since she isn't moving around.) Yes, I've had a broody go nearly that long. She was very reasonable and would eat every couple of days, and she was...

    Dark Brahma Rooster NEPA

If you don't find anyone who can take him, perhaps you can buy him another hen and keep them together, away from the flock, until she gets used to him? (I have a Dark Brahma rooster with three hens, and when I brought in another pair Manto kind of ignored them both. Once he started showing an...

    South Carolina

Can anyone within 50 or 60 miles of the Francis Marion National Forest spare a really big hen? I raise Dark Brahmas, and the hen of one pair was killed by a snake a couple of days ago. I tried to pair Sir Nigel, her mate, up with another hen, but she isn't having him, and the boss rooster is...

Old Fashioned Broody Hen Hatch A Long and Informational Thread

We had a snake that bothered only one nest, and only every three or four days, but then he'd eat a bunch. And he'd have eaten the chicks, too, once they hatched. Here he is, full of 6 eggs, about to get deported to the forest. Can you move that broody, or snake proof the coop she is in now...

Old Fashioned Broody Hen Hatch A Long and Informational Thread

Hopefully the other two will hatch by tomorrow and they will all be fine. If those two take longer than 24 more hours, the first one will get really hungry and thirsty and hard for Stella to keep quiet. It might help, in that case, to give them a little feed and water right there, where she can...

Old Fashioned Broody Hen Hatch A Long and Informational Thread

wahnsdlr, it seems whenever I could hear mine chirping inside the egg, they hatched within 24 hours (often a lot sooner.) I'd not move them while they are hatching, or for 24 hours afterwards. They will have absorbed enough food in the yolk to last them that long, but I always offer them a...

    Backyard Brahmas!!

Perhaps ask Diane Delaney, the district officer for your state for the American Brahma Club? http://www.americanbrahmaclub.org/club-officers.html

    Backyard Brahmas!!

Yours looks like a girl to me. Check the similarity to the one in front in this photo, which was taken when they were one month old. She turned out to be a pullet, and the one in back is a cockerel. Both are Dark Brahmas, and even when he was three weeks old Sir Nigel had many feathers that were...

    CAROLINA CHICKENSTOCK FALL 2012

Pie Bird sounds just as personable as ours, and I love his coloring. I think I just got lucky - Emma taught them. He (small error; we were new to guineas. Emma is a cock and Eeyore is his lady) flew up on my arm, voluntarily, and ate out of my hand. Now he does it when I call him, and he's got...

    CAROLINA CHICKENSTOCK FALL 2012

Yes, Amy, those are Emma and Eeyore, a cool pair of Pearl guineas who are raising their own keets and the ones of our other pair.

Jessy, a trio of 3-4 weeks old ones sounds great. I will be looking for you, some time after noon (and for you, Amy - thanks for your help!)

    CAROLINA CHICKENSTOCK FALL 2012

I won't get there until late, noon at best, because I work in Charleston, SC until 8am. But I have been looking for two or three Dark Brahma hens for over a year now and would raise chicks instead, if necessary. (Along with lots of guinea fowl, we have one 2yrs old Dark Brahma hen, who has...
