    Lethargic Hen/Help please!

We tried everything suggested and ended up putting her down because she just wasn't getting better and was continuing to lose weight. None of the other chickens have gotten sick, thank Heaven!

    Lethargic Hen/Help please!

Thank you so much! I will go to the feed store in the morning to get a de-wormer. She is eating a little, and I got her to drink some water with electrolytes in it. I will keep that up and try the applesauce and yougurt with her. She is one of my sweetest birds and I hate to see her not...

    Lethargic Hen/Help please!

I have a hen that is very lethargic right now. Her comb is hanging to the side, and she has green diarrhea. She eats a little and is still drinking. Is it worms or something more serious? I thought she maybe has vent gleet, but her vent area doesn't stink the way they say vent gleet should...

Do you play favorites? Admit it....it's OK....I won't tell the others....

I have one Bantam Cochin that is the sweetest bird in my flock. She is low on the pecking order because she is small, so I always make sure she gets her share of the treats! SSHHH! Don't tell the others!

    Shared Coop

My ducks share the coop with my chickens. They make such a wet mess with the water overnight that it makes keeping the litter dry next to impossible. Would it hurt the ducks not to have water in the coop with them at night if there is no food in the coop?

    Best Duck Names

What kind of duck is Shrek? I have a little female that is colored just like him, but don't have a clue what breed she is. Her name is "Puddles" because of all the black spots she has. I also have "Quackers, Cuddles and Lizzie".

    hen attacked by a dog.

If you can't, or don't want to keep her, I would check with neighbors, and possibly put up flyers to see if anyone claims her. If your turn her loose, chances are she will wander back into your yard and the dog will get her again. Chickens are easy to keep for the most part, and very rewarding...

    Our First Hatch

I just read the article on broody hens vs:incubators for hatching eggs. It has a lot of good information in it. I have an Ameracauna hen that went broody on me in the beginning of November. Thanksgiving week she hatched her first chick. There were eight eggs, but only four hatched and...

DIY HUMANE way to Kill Slaughter Chicken (Stun-kill, Gas)

By the way, farming is not a bad thing. The more you can do for yourself, and the less you rely on the government and others to take care of you, the better off you will be. You can also check with local meat lockers to see how they kill the animals. They will usually use the fastest method...

DIY HUMANE way to Kill Slaughter Chicken (Stun-kill, Gas)

I understand how you feel since my chickens have become pets. I think that the hatchet is far and away the most humane way to kill a chicken. Try to remember that the bird is a food source, and if it helps you to feel better, thank the bird for giving its' life to feed your family. Many...

    Sultan Rooster attack

I have actually picked my rooster up, held the back of his head so he couldn't peck me, and held him till he stopped struggling. He has a really healthy respect for me now, and gives me a wide berth when I am in the run area. I did this at night when he was on the roost so I wouldn't have to...

Killing your extra roosters - How to deal with it?

I like how you reasoned this out. We buy meat in the grocery store all the time without having a clue how the cow/pig/chicken was raised and cared for or how it was slaughtered, and eating it isn't any different than eating something you have raised. My husband wants to take care of butchering...

How much dried mealworms can my chickens have a day?

I have 22 chickens, 6 ducks, 2 guineas and a turkey and they will kill for mealworms. I only give them a handful or two a day. I use it as a treat for them.

The girls hated the oatmeal so what other foods for cold days?

My girls love cream of wheat. Oatmeal isn't a problem with them. They like it cooked and raw. Have you tried giving them uncooked oatmeal first?

Let's share our water heaters!!! Show us your water heaters design/setup!!!!

I love this idea. I never would have thought of a slow cooker. Mine has a warm setting that doesn't get hot on the outside, so it should work well.
