This is my lovely Silver Spangled Hamburg hen, Montana, taken a couple of years ago.
Here she is now.
This is my new one, Dakota, who we just discovered was a rooster. He's just starting to crow.
I absolutely love Hamburgs!
The heat lamp I have is a big metal one, and we use a red heat light bulb. We hang it from the ceiling with a chain so we can easily raise and lower it, and there's no chance of it falling to the shavings and causing a fire.
Chickens have been the best addition to our family; they are so much fun!
Awwww...congratulations on your babies! That's so exciting to have 23 eggs! We have no rooster, and can't have one in town limits, so I won't get to experience that, unfortunately. I have a heat light outside, so we don't bring ours in. I've read that at 4-5 weeks, they can handle lower temps...
I've had chickens since Spring '12. My first flock was 28, mostly meat birds, and few hens. We lost a few in the summer from the heat, but they were meat birds. It was a really hot summer that year. I still have 7 girls from that batch, who are all healthy and are laying great. I just got 17 new...
I just got my newest babies today! I got 3 Americaunas, 8 Red Rangers, 2 Cornish X, 1 Cuckoo Maran, 1 Pearl White Leghorn, 1 Brown Leghorn, and my freebie, a Turken! They arrived from McMurray healthy, active, and adorable!!!
Hey everyone! I haven't been on this thread in a while, but I'm happy to report that I pre-ordered 8 red rangers and 2 cornish X for meat, and 3 Easter Eggers, a barred rock, a pearl white leghorn and a brown leghorn for eggs. Chicks are coming in October. This will be a new experience for us...
I have a pair of female silver spangled Hamburgs. They are really close to wild birds. They like to lay their eggs outside the coop in a corner away from everyone else. They attempt to roost right before sundown, so we have to be alert because they can jump really high, and like to try to roost...
I love my 3 RIRs! The little one is Penny, the medium Ruby and the biggest Scarlet. They are a little loud, but loveable. They run to me as soon as I get in the chicken yard, and never seem afraid of me. If you've never had one, you must get one!
After waiting 20 weeks...we got our first eggs! Two RIRs are laying, and one Blue Andalusian. This is so much fun! There are still 7 hens left to begin laying, but so far we've had almost 2 dozen eggs from the 3 that are laying now. The girls are now 21 weeks old. Good luck everyone!
I figured I would put this little story in the Local Chicken Laws and Ordinances section. On May 21st of this year, I got 28 chicks from McMurray Hatchery. We ordered the meat and egg combo, which is 10 layers, and 15 meat birds. These were our first chickens ever. We were supposed to get 25...
They are all so pretty! I finally re-homed my Polish rooster, but the buff cochin still doesn't have a home. He will be dinner today; the neighbors complained to the town office. It's sad, but I guess roosters have it rough!
