we are now getting 7 from11..
And I'm not sure number 11 will ever lay after she got attacked by the neighbors dog..I don't know what I'll do if laying would stress out her body and she die trying to lay her first egg..
I am so sorry to hear about your girl being attacked by a dog, but at the same time, I'm THANKFUL for this post I am gleaning a LOT of great information..as one of mine was attacked today by a neighbors dog. And her wound looks a lot like your hen does.
I gave her some water w/ crushed up...
We bought some Terminator Fly Attract, it's a liquid you pour into a jar w/ water, there is a slight opening at the top to attract the flies (you can pick them up at Tractor Supply for about $7.00, the refills are about $5 for two) this works GREAT!!!!!
The first time we put one out there it...
I've found two eggs not in the laying box since they started laying, and those two were new layers., could tell by the size of the eggs.
The only thing I can think of as to why they weren't in the box is they didn't make in time, one was found outside the coop all together, while the other was...
Thank you for the tip on the forco, haven't heard of that before.
My hens have started pecking at the littlest hen, when I'm outside she comes and hides by me and they still try and peck at her.
I've read a couple places online (the link below, being one of them) where they say vinegar in...
I don't buy them, I have family and friends who have saved theirs over the past few months (since we bought the chickens) and I have a neighbor behind me who saved them even before then to take back to the stores. So check your friends and neighbors and see if they have any they could save up...
we are still getting 5 a day out of 11 hens, we had 12, but one died.
we have 4 sex-links are are just starting to squat when they come up to me, so maybe they will start laying soon.
we have 2 banny's who still aren't squatting and they are the same age as the 5 RIR's we have that are...
okay, thank you...I will also let my husband know.
though he tends to let me deal with learning all I can, and doesn't desire to really know..except they need fed, watered and eggs collected..
her mouth is open because she was trying to peck at the camera when I was trying to take the picture, however, if that is the case, I read some where that Vetrx on a q-tip w/ water could also help with a respiratory infection?? (I think)
I haven't had need to lay her on her back, she's pretty...
One of my hens has a swollen waddle and it's browning on the bottom around the edges., and they are not nearly as bright red as they have been, she's only recently started laying, so I'm hesitant on what type of medications to give.
I've moved her away from the others based on a few links...
Might check some of the feed stores in Middleburg see what they offer--I know Russell's Feed Store has some bagged mixes at a reasonable price. Not sure if it's organic or not but you could call and find out.

Many people who have never raised chickens believe roosters are needed for eggs. Even some whose families raised them when they were kids 'assumed' they needed roosters...my husband was one of those..
Sleepy71,
you said your father in law does aqua culture, does he have an aquaponics system? if so could you post pictures?
My husband wants to build one in our backyard
New to chickens here in the Burg, well, we had them as children and now decided it was time to get some as adults..been wanting to for a few years, but this year made the decision. My son would say "I don't want to be known as the "chicken farmer kid" mom" now that we have them, he's wanting the...
