We raise mallards and bought a bunch of adults from someone in Michigan, with the mallards were some just like yours!! We thought maybe they were mallards mixed with a pekin or something else. It is nice to know what they are!
We put a layer of cheese cloth in the bottom of the hatcher and incubator. not only does this help with humidity, it makes them easier to clean out later. It is light weight and not bulky.
Each time you open the incubator or hatcher spray the eggs with a bottle of warm water ( I fill mine with hot water because when you spray it , it really cools off). We have found that this really increased our hatch. Last hatch was 170 duck eggs and we had 155 hatch, percentage wise this was a...
We hatch out hundreds of ducks and chickens and it sounds like you are doing everything correctly. I agree with the other poster that shipped eggs can be a problem. The only other thing that we do differently is when they are put into the hatcher, we do not fill the little reservior with water...
I just had to share..my 2 yr old grandson is having a difficult time talking, he started speach therapy 2 weeks ago because he hasn't yet to utter a real word. Yesterday while visiting our house my rooster started crowing and little Lucas stopped in his tracks and stared at the roo...then again...
We put dish soap in the water to desolve the fat around the feathers so they pluck easier. I have got to say that the feathers just brushed off except for the wing feathers those we had to pull a bit. We had one person dispatching the birds and 2 of us dunking and plucking and 2 gutting. We...
Well, we finally finished butchering our 96 buff roos yesterday. It was a chore but actually went smoothly. My question is: We dipped them in 145-150 degree water with a few drops of dish soap in it, hosed off the birds after plucking , kept a bucket of bleach water handy for continually...
I now have wyndottes laying and am getting large brown eggs. They started off not to impressive at first but are gradually getting bigger. I also have 15 buff orpington hens that should start laying in a couple weeks. I am hoping to get larger eggs from them. McMurry hatchery has a great web...
I agree the bleach /water method is the only way. One thing to consider though is after a bottle of bleach is opened it only holds its disinfectant properties for about a month. ( Niece is a molecular biologist) We have hatched out and raised about 450 ducks this year and have used bleach...
We just lost 3 of our buffs ...caught an owl eyeing them up the next evening. 2 of the chickens had their head and neck missing. My husband says this is what owls do when they kill. Sorry for your loss...
We raise mallards and no you cannot feed any duck medicated food . I have heard that some people can get away with it if they start them on medicated right from day one but we never wanted to take a chance. I wouldn't try it.
We lost one roo and two hens just this last week from an Owl, we now have netting over the top of the pen. the owl actually went into the coop hatch and killed the roo. I was shocked to see the next evening ( after the netting was put up) this massive owl sitting right on the fence post of the...
Hope I can help, we raise mallard ducks and had to keep the ducklings in the basement in the spring because of the cold weather...I agree stinky! Messy and alot of work. We built a couple portable pens that we finally moved them into that would take a heat lamp while it was cold. The only other...
Thanks for the pen advice, I also forgot to ask...how are the Buffs for laying? Do they produce a larger egg than the Wyndottes? And has anyone had any luck crossing wyndottes with buffs? Will that improve the breast size on them? thanks again
I am new to this site and also new to raising Chickens so have a few questions, hope you all can help. I first bought 12 silver wyndotte pullets for egg production, they are laying and doing nicely but I am a little dissapointed in the egg size. A few weeks after we purchased the wyndottes I...
