    Skylight?

Our coop is set so the roof pitches North. Heat wasn't a propblem with windows open in summer. They hold almost no heat (you said that wouldn't be a problem) so I'm going to enclose the joist cells with plastic.

So what do you do when the power goes out?

Just adding fuel to the fire: The methods used in keeping animals hundreds of years ago are much different than what we do now. Perhaps the most relevant thing to mention is coop design. I designed my coop based on what others have built and what I wanted in my back yard, I did not have the...

So what do you do when the power goes out?

Heat is a concern right now because 14 of our birds are 8wks old. They were in a seperate structure until last weekend and we had been slowly bringing their temps down for several weeks. Right now they have a milk house heater and a 90w flood keeping the coop above 40F at night. Water is less...

So what do you do when the power goes out?

For those of you who have to heat your coop, what do you do when the power goes out? We live in an area where it isn't uncommon and our coop is powered by an adjacent property we own so even a generator would be a pain in the butt. I've got enough extention cords but it would be a pain to hook...

Pecking order - how much dominance is too much

I'm interested in hearing responses too, as we just lost a 6wk old Australorp to one of our older bantams during the introduction period.

Worms passed to humans in the eggs??

DE's efficacy for crawling insects is diminished when wet because intake is generally through the 'gills' of those insects or through dry contact. When taken internally by a bug it works, wet or not, but bugs don't eat DE by choice, they inhale it or crawl through it.

    Pine straw

Pine straw harbors and breeds fungal spores (bad for birds to breath) and doesn't absorb water. Pine shavings are the way to go. Functional and cheap.

Is it normal for a rooster to "cock a doooo"?

I read somewhere that most roos only crow 4 syllables, not 5 like when we imitate. My silkie roo only has 3 audible syllables, my OEGB has 4.

    The thing that I built

One more thing- adding a latch at the bottom (a type that coons won't figue out) will prevent varmints from prying the door open at the bottom. Think your door is strong enough right now in that situation? Think again.

    The thing that I built

Oh yeah, and don't forget tar paper underneath the sheet roofing. It helps keep air between the OSB and roofing material. Ask around, you might find someone with enough 'scrap' laying around.

    The thing that I built

You might think of adding some sheet roofing to the top to keep that OSB from falling apart. It is basically one big shingle on a roll, and would keep water from being absorbed by the top OSB.

    Our newbie poultry palace

I would watch to make sure that they figure out the new watering system. Make sure each on knows how to get a drink. If it doesn't work a regular waterer is cheap and looks like you've got room to add one. I love the names! We too choose food names- Caesar, Pot Pie, Pattie, Alfredo, Curry...

    Coop Insulation

Oh yeah, do what ever you can to retain the heat the birds make on their own and you make with the heater/bulb. Insulate well and block and drafts but maintain ventilation. The built in fan on the heater will help circulate air inside. Piling bales of straw on outside walls is cheap and...

    Coop Insulation

I would try mounting a milkhouse style heater (cheap, walfart or home depot~$13). They have a built in themostat for some temp control, and built in shut off if tipped over. A light on a timer would help too, but only during the day unless running through the night.

I can't stand (pun intended) walking around bent over. Having head clearance is very nice.

bum leg? Slipped tendon? Anyone have a clue? Added PIC

Big bummer. We had to put her down this morning. Health went downhill a bit and she had bone protruding on both legs (we originally only saw it on one leg, but I looked again and could see it on both). Pretty sure it was indeed a slipped achiles tendon. Wish we could have done more, but...

Newbie & Building My 1st Run

Quote: If you don't need much strength, try "tree netting". The stuff we used is about 1/2" poly mesh and keeps the birds in and raptors out. Available in 7x100 as deer netting or 28x28(?) as tree netting for about $25.

Newbie & Building My 1st Run

Not sure what kinda soil/water table you might have, but I would make sure that there is proper drainage under your entire setup. I know all the rivers that I frequent have the potential for problems to arise...
