Got a quote on a spring yard clean-up from our lawn care service (thinking: mower & manual weeding, not Chemlawn) and one of the things he listed on the estimate was fertilizer. Knowing we have chickens, he listed organic fertilizer. Now, our hens don't free range--- they have a grand ol' time...
Our girls are very cuddly, I'm sure they'd love a blow dry... but bringing them in the house makes for an interesting time, so I think we'll let them be for now.
They are so funny in the rain! (Wait, they're ALWAYS funny...)
Town of Smithtown has no restrictions on chickens as far as I know, although you may not sell eggs for profit and permanent accessory structures beyond a certain footage require a permit. The town doesn't allow livestock (i.e. cattle) although that's somewhat ironic since Whisper the Bull is the...
We love our Orpingtons! They are such friendly, inquisitive, lovely birds who enjoy being held. (Sometimes we're not sure if they're chickens or puppy dogs...)
Thanks, everyone. I felt better after reading the replies. The girls still haven't learned their lesson (they got wet from the snow again this week) but they seem to be doing fine. Oh, chicken behaviour...
I know our girls (2 Brahmas & 2 Orpingtons, 23 weeks) are cold hardy, and they seem to have handled our frosty days well so far. Today we were unexpectedly hit with that Nor'Easter (it wasn't supposed to be as serious this far east on the Island, but we got a lot of snow.)
When I went out the...
Living in NYC 'burb makes a lot of the preferred methods of dealing with these critters impossible, but we will start getting proactive (and creative).
Yes, our girls LOVE it outside already. They were so cute to watch when I brought them out and they first took everything in. Kind of...
...DH discovers a raccoon ---the same evening(!!!)--- on top of the tarp-and-poultry-netted roof of our "dog kennel" chicken run.
This is more than a little disarming... is it typical to encounter a raccoon the first night?! Did they scope us out while we spent 2 days building the run?!
The...
Dear all,
As our "girls" approach 8.5 weeks, I'm trying to ID them. While we are hoping for all pullets, we will get by if one of our silent, calm Brahmas is a roo. Two of them strongly look like pullets, so I haven't taken as many pictures of those birds. (Plus that Orp is a real camera shy...
Sorry for the stinky old cel phone pics... hope this one is a little clearer!
She's the Brahma closest to the camera. (The one behind her looks dark in the picture, but she's actually got the classically golden
Buff Brahma chickie head.)
Thanks so much for your help!
Hi all! So glad to be a part of Backyard Chickens. This is my first post. Of my four baby chicks (who are now almost 2 weeks old), 2 are supposed to be Buff Brahmas. The feathered feet of both of the girls gives me reason to believe that they are in fact both Brahmas, but one has a much darker...
