Roo attacks his favorite girl with her apron on

I've never even heard of a chicken apron. I can't tolerate an overly aggressive rooster. I don't know if it's the breed or what. I mostly keep RIR's and have had really good luck with them being fairly tame towards me but not one another. White leghorns can be aggressive. The meanest I've...

    Chicken Vaccines?

I don't vaccinate mine and never would give them any type of medicine of any kind. I think it the birds live in clean conditions and are properly cared for most of them will live long healthy lives.

    Help- Port Charlotte Florida

Maybe a zoo would take your rooster or a school? I live near a zoo and they have chickens walking around all over. I don't know how far you are from Key West, but that town has chickens all over the place. ;)

Parents of toddlers, a little sleep advice please

My daughter is 2 1/2 and at nap time we have a set routine of reading books, hugs and kisses and then we say goodbye and I close the door and walk out of the room. If she falls asleep that's good but lately she hasn't fallen asleep and that's okay too. We just make sure she stays in her room for...

It's a wonderful day in South Carolina

Frosty, I think I'll always want more. I don't know why but land ownership (on a large scale)has always been a dream of mine. We're really only using about 5acres of what we have. The rest is wooded. I really enjoy animals and can see myself with dozens of breeds of animals for food and play...

    How to Raise Turkeys

First thing Turkeys are hard to keep alive. I tried some this year. I bought 15 and within 4 days 4 of them died... a few days later I lost one more. Now since then it's been smooth sailing. I think the mistake I made was I didn't realize the temp for the turkeys needed to be 5 degrees higher...

Is it normal for a rooster to peck a new hen? (introducing silkie to existing flock of 10)

I would've done the same thing you did. I had a pair of RIR in my flock once that picked on a small injured bird and practically pecked it to death. It was injured, but I didn't think they'd do that.

    Advice on beaks

I have some birds that won't stop pecking their eggs. If I check 3 times a day sometimes I can save one or two but that's it. I"m actually thinking about snipping the top beak a little. I've already tried the golf ball thing and that doesn't work. I'm feeding them the best feed money can buy...

Is a Rooster a "must have"?

I have a rooster but he is wimpy. All the hens follow him around though. Funny I don't think they know the difference. I would suggest putting the birds in a chicken tractor and just dragging them from place to place each day. It only takes a few seconds. If not that then at least provide a...

Anybody Near Columbia SC that wants to share an order of chicks?

Next time try a feed store. You can buy just one if you want. I go to Swansea Milling, but there are feed stores all over that you can check out. Sorry I know this is way to late, but just in case you run into the same issue next time. I have a bunch of RIR pullets if you're interested.

    Hen laying like crazy !

I've never had a chicken do that, but I would say it's possible. I heard a story one time about someone cracking an egg and there was an egg inside the egg.
