Glad to see this works... I had two Orps that went crazy and refused to leave the nest, so I gave each 8 of my royal palm eggs... I am dying to see the babies.
So excited to see this works.. I have two Orps who were bound and determined to hatch something, so I gave them each 8 Turkey eggs... I am DYING for them to hatch!
He was scheduled to hatch the day after his egg was crushed. He did not make it. I gently removed all the broken shell and membrane and placed him under a 100 watt bulb under a damp paper towel. He didn't uncurl at all, barely kicked or moved his head, just laid there like he was still in the...
The egg isn't bleeding anymore. But the membrane seemed to be getting shrinking, I pulled the loose membrane and shell away enough to see that he'd absorbed all his yolk, I know it probably wasn't best, but he had no chance if he got smothered by the membrane, he's under a heat lamp and by my...
My broody is on day 20. Yesterday an egg was cracked and the albumin intact (not pipped-dented in instead of out). Today, it was smashed and the albumin is torn in three places. There is still veining in the albumin and it seems the break is mostly around the chick's back. The chick is still...
I got 3 poults at the feed store, thinking they were just like chicks and BOY have I learned my lesson. I lost 2 of my first three (likely cocci because I put them in the brooder I just raised 25 chicks in.) I went and refilled my brand new turkey brooder tub and now have 4. I am doing 1tsp ACV/...
Grab a bird, flip it over and look very closely around the base of the tail. If you have lice, there will be little white bugs, between an eighth and quarter of an inch long. They are usually light colored, but can be dark colored in darker chickens.
Thank you internet!! ^^
They can be...
I've been hiding under a rock for a while so I haven't been on here for a while.
*Absolutely refuses to admit I added 20 new layers and 40 meaties to the brooder because our local Ag shoppe had a 1/2 price sale*
I saw something a few pages back about possibly growing out the slow growers to...
I guess I should quit complaining about my slow growers so much... at least I only paid a quarter each for them.
I wish I could remember what hatchery I saw the Cornish cross, straight run chicks for 29.00/100... I would love to split with someone(or someoneS) at that price just to see how...
I don't raise them for customers, like I said earlier it would be too cost prohibitive, because I would include my time into the cost. I raise them for myself and my grandma. I am waiting for my next batch to get a ship date from the hatchery... ho hum... at least they are cute for a week or two.
Thanks for the tip, but maybe you missed the part where I said my chickens have access to 1/4 acre of yard 100% of the time. I have had no predator problems (other than the town's cat problem) so far. It just so happened that my feed store sold me CX that were really slow growers, that ended up...
Love it! I wish I had your self esteem! I was pushing it to tell myself I'm worth 10$ an hour!!
If you're doing it for your self, It's fine not to account for your time... In my calculations I did account for my time, because someone asked me to raise meat birds for them, and I can not see...
I think I figured it cost me in terms of feed, and my time about $36 per bird to raise my chickens. All together for feed and time to raise my birds came to a total dollar amount of $1680.
I figured my time at an hour a day for feeding and cleaning the coop, and checking for mites, doctoring...
Good to hear you are having some success. The egg laying will come when she's ready! Some of the things I have read say 25 or more weeks before some Barred Rocks lay.
SO True... there is a firmness and flavor to our birds that I will never forget. I am finding it harder and harder to eat anywhere but home; none of the food is the same as from my garden, my canning, or my home grown meat! I can't even buy a tomato in the store!
I roasted two chickens the day we processed, BOTH TIMES. My kids hardly touched them, spent the whole meal talking about chicken guts and how they flap around after losing their heads... but they were still delicious.
