    Dead Chicken

We have 2 - 12 lb feeders for 11, now 10, chickens. I wasn't home when my husband found her, but he didn't mention anything about her being underweight. They also free range for about 4 to 5 hours a day.

    Dead Chicken

What would cause a seemingly healthy 5 month old chicken to die? We have a mixed flock of 3 year olds and five month olds. They were successfully integrated about a month ago. My husband and I went out of town for 2 nights, leaving the girls enough food and water during our absence. When we...

    Soft Shells

This is a first for this problem and they are just coming out of a molt. I think it is just one hen. They all seem fine. Not one is acting in any way other than normal. It's been a couple of days since the last episode so hopefully it's just an anomaly.

    Soft Shells

I have a bit of a dilemma. My chickens are 18 months old and have been laying perfect eggs since they started laying. They are on Purina Layena Plus and oyster shell. Starting about a week ago, one of them, not sure which one, has started laying eggs with soft spots and possibly no shell at...

Hens are 28 and 29 weeks old and still not laying

The ameraucana appears to be molting. She's lost some feathers on her back and around her ears. It doesn't appear that any of the others are picking on her so I'm going with molting. I'll just have to wait it out! I'm just so anxious for them to get started!

Hens are 28 and 29 weeks old and still not laying

The two that are laying are and EE and a Barred Rock. The others are Barred Rock, Ameraucana, Rhode Island Red, Buff Orpington, and a Black Australorp.

Hens are 28 and 29 weeks old and still not laying

I have 7 girls and 5 of them are still not laying! Granted, it is winter and we did just go through a bout of fowl pox, but 2 started laying just after Thanksgiving. What's up? Any ideas?

    Fowl Pox

The Sulmet wasn't meant to treat the pox but more as a preventative for any secondary infections. I had asked about something to put on the sores because they were raw looking and she recommended it.

    Fowl Pox

I did give them a dose of Sulmet (3 days) on the advice of my contact at the feed store where we purchase the food and I have also been giving them a vitamin/mineral supplement. I'll have to add in the vinegar. Every little bit helps. Thanks for the advice everyone.

    Fowl Pox

It's definitely pox. All but one has black crusty bumps on their combs and wattles. The one that I'm concerned about seems to be doing fine. There are no signs of any distress. She's was out this afternoon with her sisters running around the yard and eating grass. I'm just going to have to keep...

    Fowl Pox

Well, my girls are poxed! I have 7 and only one is not showing signs of this dreadful illness. Everyone seems to be doing just fine, eating, running around, drinking water, etc. However, one seems to be, for lack of a better word, hoarse. Could it be that she has contracted the wet form of...

Introducing day olds to week olds

Ok, I did it again! Just got two day old chicks, a buff orpington and a australorp. How do I integrate them into the existing flock of five 1 week old chicks?

    Hi!

I am just joining the forum and am a new mama to 5 darling girls, 2 barred rocks, 2 amercuanas, and 1 RR. I have been reading the forum for several weeks now in anticipation of getting my chicks and finally joined tonight. I posted a thread on the raising chicks forum because I think one of...

    New mama to 5 girls

I am hoping you all can give me some insight to an issue I think one of my chicks has. I have 2 barred rocks, 2 amercuanas, and 1 RR, they are a week old. All seem to be doing great. They are active, eating and drinking well and sleeping. However, one of the amercuanas has a dark runny stool...
