When I got rid of my roo, it took my girls 4 days to decide it was a 'good' thing.. They would not come out of the coop at first. They would stay on the roost until I removed them...I started to use a little treats... One of my Buff Orpington Hens took over as "Boss" and they have been just fine...
I have a hen who ( I think) is blind. She rarely ever leaves the coop and when I place her out in the run, she walks around the fence edge until she finds the door. I wasn't sure why her eye site was bad I didn"t notice any damage anywhere-- She was about 2.5 yrs old when I realized she was...
We are clearing the spot for my new coop (FINALLY)... I would like to have a coop divided into sections. I need/want a laying flock, some Bantam Cochins, someSilver Penciled Rocks, an area for feed and an area for several small cages for sick/hurt/broodies..
I need some ideas on how to arrange...
Because of a move and no coop on the farm--I had to leave my chickens for a caregiver to take care of them. I go once/twice a week--to take treats, food, give fresh water but the day to day care is being done by someone else.. Whe I went by Wed. I found one of my hens looking very thin and not...
I am not blaming the caregiver. They are my chickens and I should have been perpared to bring them w/ me... BUT I wish he had just told me --that he couldn't /wouldn't do it... But they are where they need to be.. and I will work hard to get them healthy.....
Thank you for the responses.
The temps have been high 90*-106*. Little rain. I have been letting someone else take care of my girls on a reg. basis and I have been cking on them once in a while...because we moved and haven't gotten the new coop done... They have mites, they might have worms, they look terrible, they haven't...
I found that the girls love the really short clippings. If it is over 3" high, I will double cut it, rake it and pour it in the run.. I don't use any chemicals on my garden or my yard so they get a little of everything..
Because we live in the deep woods/country--we have every kind of predator you can name. Everything from black bear (Not often seen but there have been a few sitings) to domestic dogs and cats. I chose to use heavy gauge chain link fencing and hardware cloth! I have seen too many horror stores...
I let mine girls out around 7 am.. This is where that 4sq ft x 1 chicken (or more) of coop floor space is great.. Each night, I fill all the feeders and make sure the waterer is clean and full and I throw a handful of premium birdseed down on the floor for them to scratch thru.. If I am...
It is sold at Lowe's as 'bird-netting' --for fruit trees etc.. Maybe the holes are 1/2" sq.. Not sure. If you place it loosely the snakes try to go thru it and then out another hole.. they can't back out because of scales (so I have been told)... and get tangled in the netting.
