This is just cool! My neighbors chickens have been coming across a two acre field into my fenced one acre chicken yard all summer & fall. Now it is winter & they have decided to roost with my flock & lay eggs for me. I was getting upset about them eating all the great feed we provide until they...
Wyandotte's are the best! I have 30 hens of varying ages & colors and 2 roosters. Good layers, free rangers, and friendly. The two roosters get a little high strung during the spring season is upon us. But A+ when caring for the flock. I have never witnessed any bad behavior towards baby chicks...
My thoughts exactly! Ours even catch frogs in the field near our pond. It's pretty funny watching the flock chase the lucky hen around while she's trying to ingest the frog. By the time the others get tired of chasing her, the frogs legs are missing and their isn't much left for the original...
I collect my eggs for hatching daily over 3 days and store them on the counter in egg crates little end down. I put all in incubator at the same time. I count out 18 days for lockdown & laying eggs flat .( I do use an egg turner.) My eggs start pippin on day 19 & 20, hatched and those all made...
Both of my Bluelaced red Wyandotte roosters crow and carry-on when the girls start their egg song. Usually it's the girls that they flock with/breed. I thinks it's too funny. Like a puffed up new Daddy!!!!
Long story.
Head BLRW rooster 2 yrs. old this May. When he only had 5 BLRW hens fertility high. 80% Added 13 Assorted colors Wyandotte hens to the flock. 30%
I kept one of his BLRW sons that is now 9 mos. old. The younger BLRW cockerel has 2 little Colombian ladies that he grew up with...

This 8 month old pullet is the product of a Bluelaced Red Wyandotte roo & either a Silverlaced hen or a Bluelaced Red hen (splash) . Her bluelacing is neither black nor the brighter blue of her roo daddy.
Its a smokey grey color.
Any suggestions on which might be her Mom? She was hatched...
Plenty of food is the answer !!! and water. I do warm/hot water 2 x per day plus reduced greens from grocery. They eat flock raiser, plenty of BOSS & corn, and house scraps. had to butcher an egg eater a week ago and you wouldn't believe the fat accumulation on /inside the hen. I started...
Mine look the same. A little bit of Vaseline will help for future frostbite. Take heed, spring is coming! It's been a real hard one here in Western Maine too in the Lakes Region. Pretty girls!
Thank you. I know two of the culprits because of their legs bands. I think I will wait until spring and see what happens. If the behavior continues then into the soup pot with them but right now one is a pullet and young. The other always a good layer is taking her winter break. They are...
The temps are below zero. I collect 2-3 times a day. No heat source in coop but plenty of hay, shavings, shredded newspaper. When the eggs freeze & crack I use a brick or a hoe to chop them open on the snow for the hens. I wont sell them because of bacteria or eat them ourselves. LATELY some...
ok, my two BLRW x SLW crosses were both pullets. They are now 5 months old and one is laying.
So, at first glance they look GL until they stand next to my 8 month olde GL hen, Then you notice the difference. Nothing is really pronounced in color. The brown is not flashy and instead of black...
I am counting the day until spring too!!!!! I live on LONG LAKE & BRANDY POND in Naples Maine. The lakes look pretty with all the snow covering them. But the wind chill factor YUCK!
Mine eat twice as much during our cold weather (-25) last night than normally. Like you no heat. They survive not always happy but only two more months of extreme weather here in Western Maine. LOL I am counting the days until spring 2014!
