    Hens picking on one hen

I have 5 hens that were brought up together and have done fine for the last 2 years. Then suddenly I noticed one black australorp hen picking on one of my easter eggers to the point she would hide. I separated the australorp for a week and then put her back into general population. Things did...

    Healthy appearing 1YO hen died

Yesterday evening I last visited the girls and as usual they were all their normal curious selves, following me, eating, watching every thing I do, etc. nothing unusual from any of them. Very active. This morning one of the speckled Sussex was lying on the coop bottom right under one level of...

I tried Koop Clean and didn't care for it, I found it harder to keep clean and needed to clean more often. I love the pine and leaves idea. Will be gathering those this weekend. Darlene

    Nest box help

I am going to try a pad, any substitute ideas until I can get a pad? Hay or Straw is an issue because I have to buy a bale and certainly will not use it all. I will look into it at some of the local farms.

    Nest box help

Wow that was fast, I do have a small lip. Thought if I made it too tall it would make the box opening too small. Thanks for the info.

    Nest box help

I have 3 girls laying for about a week now. At first they would lay in the nest box perfectly, now they throw all the pine shavings out and lay on the hard wood and for the last three days the eggs are broke on the end. Any suggestions or ideas? Last week laying with pine shavings...

1 week old and flying out the brooder already :(

Thanks guys interesting comments, I just finished setting up the dog crate in it's real home and wrapped the bottom half to cut down on drafts. Ms Curious was not fazed a bit still jumping on the waterer and checking things out. My next question - 1 of my easter eggers has not grown a bit, the...

1 week old and flying out the brooder already :(

So, tonight I decided to sit for awhile and observe the "girls" to start to get to know their personalities. Well to my surprise one of the speckled Sussex decided I was more interesting and jumped on the waterer and then out the brooder. SURPRISE. So plan #2 get the extra large dog crate and...

    Shed Conversion

I converted a portion of my 12x18 into a 4x12 coop area. This gives me plenty of room to store supplies, get their dry meals ready and all the wild bird supplies and gardening stuff. While I am doing all of this I let them roam the rest of the shed, they are very curious. I also made a door...

    Egg laying

No skunk, the nest box material was all wet and clumpy tonight. I don't think I have rats either. The chickens are well protected. I think I will take pics of the coop tomorrow and see if anyone has any suggestions. Need a video camera. LOL. I ordered a rolling nest box.

    Egg laying

So for anyone watching my posts, here is the latest. I filled an egg with mustard and added a fair amount of blue food dye. HA... this morning no egg and no blue dye anywhere. This prompted me to completely clean the coop out and still no mustard, mustard egg or blue dye. I decided to hang...

    Egg laying

Yes the shell was intact with a hole about the size of a quarter pecked in it and the insides gone, no chance of rats. I give them prepared pellet, feather fixer currently, fresh fruits and veggies in the PM. They get oyster shell mixed with their cracked corn. Still no eggs and the nest box...

    Egg laying

Thanks, that's great news. Again tonight the nest box is wet and clumping and no eggs. I am concerned about them already eating their eggs.
