Question for bragabit.... do you mean that you didn't give them chick feed? Did they do well on layer feed? Isn't the extra calcium a problem? It would be great to not have to have different feed, b/c the older ones chow on it too.
Thanks!
We got live chicks to put under a broody hen who had been sitting for 3 weeks. She adopted them and raised them with the rest of our flock and they are happy and healthy now at 5 months of age and integrated perfectly w/ the rest of the flock. I didn't have to do any of the work! Yah! I...
1. I have a 5 month old roo who has begun mating the hens... is it too early for the eggs to be fertile yet?
2. I have a broody hen, so I want to leave some (hopefully fertile) eggs under her and try to let her hatch them out and raise them naturally. Can I add eggs for 2 or 3 days to the...
I have some 6 week old chicks that I slipped under a broody silkie when they were 3 days old... PRECIOUS! She's raised them very well. I keep them in a mini coop with her at night, but they have been integrated with all of my other hens all day since they first arrived. My question is, when...
Thank you. We put a bandaide on it just in case and tucked it under our broody w/ the other chicks. This morning at sunrise we're going to check on them.
Thanks so much for your response. I hope it works. The legs were not splayed out to the sides like the ones I saw on other posts, but out...
When it sits it's legs go forward, not really to the side. It also lifts it's wings up constantly (the others don't). That's encouraging that yours was normal after a few days. Maybe this one will be ok... I HOPE! I'm putting them under our broody hen tonight in hopes that she'll adopt them!
Is it normal for a newly hatched chick (3 days old) to walk backwards? I just picked up a few 3 day old EE's and one of them keeps sitting down on it's hind end with it's feet forward and when it walks or rocks backwards or sort of scoots.
Thanks for any input. I'm worried :S
I have 8 14 week old pullets and 6 laying hens. They have been integrated in the same coop/run now for a few weeks and seem to be doing fine. However, the big hens keep chowing on the pullets' Grower/Finisher feed and barely eat their Layer feed. The pullets often eat the layer feed instead...
GREAT NEWS! After only a few days of treatment w/ vit. E as well as polyvisol drops, Zena, our little black silkie seems totally fine and back to normal. We did not separate her, but I could see the benefit of that as she did get stepped on a bit. She's a tough little warrior and seems to...
Thank you so much for all of your helpful responses. I guess I'll have to keep them in the brooder for awhile longer at night... they're outside in a covered pen all day when it's in the 70's or above. I don't have a good night time enclosure for them outside yet... I can't wait till they...

She doesn't seem to be getting pecked by the other chicks. But she does get stomped on a bit if they shuffle around. She's the only silkie in the bunch so she's so tiny compared to the others.
Thanks for your advice!
I have "Hi-Vite Drops" that I had for my sick kitty that I was wondering if it would work for this, as it's too late to go out looking for the other vitamins needed. I do have vit. E that I put on her beak to get the process started tonight. THe Hi Vite Drops have vit. A, B, D, E, K, Niacin...
This little chick has been totally fine and healthy and suddenly today starting bending her neck waaaaaaaay under her body and falling over. At first I thought it was because I put her in the bright sunlight, but I just looked and she did it again in her brooder tonight. Is this crookneck? Is...
Thanks to everyone on this list who offered advice and encouragement during the planning and construction of our coop... which is now home to 6 lovely hens and 8 more that are currently in the brooder.
Here are some long overdue photos.
