meyer hatchery says in its description of black australorps: " From the time these chicks hatch until they are fully grown, their feathers have white tips" So maybe I will know if it is an australorp if it has white tips on its feathers when it starts to feather out?
Thank you! I googled pictures of both the australorps and the black jersey giants and he/she looks like both of those to me, so I suppose could be either. It is not growing as fast as its comrades in the brooder. I'm not sure if this is part of whatever is making it have trouble with its legs or...
Neat thanks maybe next time I'll try that. For now here is an update on what worked for me:
I kept them separated in the same brooder by dividing the brooder with 1/2" x 1" rabbit wire from Lowes. After 36 hours I removed the wire and everyone was just fine! No issues :)
The legs are orange with some black on them (or yellow with some gray depending on the lighting!) I haven't noticed its comb, I'll check when I get back tonight :)
Thanks :) I've poured over their website and come up empty. It was from their hatching egg assortment: http://www.meyerhatchery.com/productinfo.a5w?category=Hatching%20Eggs&grd_prodone_filter=PRODUCT_ID%20%3d%20%27ECAS%27
It is smaller than the other chicks. I'm actually worried about it, it had...
Ok so here is a 4 day old chick, he/she hatched from an assorted egg I ordered from Meyer Hatchery. I know the egg the chick came from was "normal" sized (not bantam) and light brown. Thoughts on breed?
Thanks! :)
Sad :/. This is my first year raising the broilers (I have done dual purpose only previously) and I was thinking of keeping one of the hens but knowing eveyone says they do not do well... sigh.
Maybe, if your rooster/hen mating is the right combination to make sexlinked chicks, otherwise no. See if you have one of these color combinations:

I hope that helps :D
Thanks :) The story of your two chicks is encouraging. I am planning on waiting until tomorrow when the youngest are a little stronger and trying again... Hopefully better luck next time!
Update:
I have divided the brooder with spare rabbit cage wire that was 1/2" by 1" welded wire for now, with the two different color chicks on each side.
When we brooded our Brahma's last year I moved them from their brooder (a large metal horse water trough) to the hen house (8x12 feet) when they were just a couple of weeks old. I can't remember how old they were exactly, but big enough that they were very competent on going under the heatlamp...
I incubated 32 eggs of mixed breeds and ended up with a staggered hatch of 19 chicks (they were mostly shipped eggs). One looks like it isn't going to make it, head still tucked under wing and eyes not open, the rest seem healthy.
I had a lot of chicks hatch Sunday night/Monday morning, and I...
I want to learn more about raising Coturnix quail and I am suprised to not be able to find many books on them. I had assumed there would be a "storey's guide to quail" or something, but my google searches are coming up empty. Something that shows the pros and cons of different breeds, basic...
Thank you for the information :).
I did find that Metzer farms ships them in March, so that is earlier than most I have found.

Hello all,
I was wondering why no guinea hens seem to be available from hatcheries in the early spring? Lots of hatcheries seem to be selling chicks now, and I see members on here are having 2013 guinea keet hatches, so why do none of the hatcheries have guineas available before May (at least...
I hatched a single baby chick on Saturday. The chick is now 3 days old.
It makes the stressed-out HELP HELP cries of a baby chick almost constantly. Last night it was silent, and when we checked, it was very lethargic. An hour later, it was even worse, we thought we were going to lose it. This...
I am trying to decide between silkies and Andalusians (two that a local, biosecure hatchery has available). I like the thought of the silkies more but worry they won't tolerate our 115+ heat index summers here in VA :/
I have no idea if they are show quality or not sadly. We raise Morgan horses so I can tell for those, but as far as chickens go I have no idea! I read the standard for the Brahma and just came away with my eyes crossed :p.
I wanted to show these but after coming back from a poultry swap with...
