Thanks so much, that link was great. After reading I am thinking they are lice not mites. I plan to get something tomorrow from Southern States; people keep mentioning DE - what exactly is that? If I ask for DE will they know or does that stand for something?
Susan
thanks everyone. I looked at the link and they really don't look like that. They look exactly like seed ticks and are FAST. Everytime I touch a chicken I get them on my hands and arms and have to pick them off.
maybe it's lice?
Either way I am going to get either Seven's or DE tomorrow. What...
ok, I did some research and assuming they are chicken mites the internet suggest Seven's Dust. Has anyone tried that? If so was it effective or do you have a better recommendation?
Susan
Everytime I go down to see the girls, I come back with tiny little bugs on me. They actually look like seed ticks but aren't. Are those what the chicken mites look like? How can I safely get rid of them?
Please help.

First let me say yes I researched raising chicks as we already raised 24 from 1 day to now 1 year old however it was different b/c those we purchased from McMurray so they all came one day old and no mama hen to contend with so that seemed easier.
I moved mama, baby and non hatched egg and 2...
Our batam hen's egg FINALLY hatched - - It's soooo cute!!!
We've done this before so need help:
1. We had left her with the other chickens; should we now move mom and baby?
2. When do we start feeding the baby?
Any help is great!!
Susan
Well we came home today to a baby chick laying under Mrs. Camo Now we have questions -
1. We'd left the bantam mama hen in with the other chicks should we now move mom and baby to their own area?
2. When do we start feeding the baby? It was just born today so they are still bonding and...
I think she is tired of me checking on her; she gives me that "look"
I have another hen that's become broody and if these two don't hatch my hubby isn't going to let us try anymore He said I'm driving him crazy worrying about them.
Susan
my hen has been sitting on two eggs for 21 days; when should they hatch? We candled them about 2 weeks ago and saw heartbeats in both; should we candle again? or just be patient?
help!
Susan
We give them access 24/7 however our pen is has a roof w/ shingles, etc. and we didn't use chicken wire we used regular wire that goes 2 feet under ground to prevent anything from digging their way in. We've had it for a year and nothings gotten in yet!
They are up way earlier then I am!
Susan
We let ours free range about 3 hours a day outside their lot - which means they are free to go anywhere on our 10 acres but everyone of the girls will come back to the coop to lay their eggs in the boxes; we've never had them lay anywhere else - that we know of anyway
Does anyone know when the next swap is in VA? I thought Gilman's Farm in Glen Allen normally has one in April but haven't heard. I am interested in getting some more sex links and around my area a trade show is normally the only way to obtain some w/o having to order babies.
Susan
I was giving them away at work but it got to be where people almost "expected" them. I've decided that I am going to start selling them for $2 a dozen - just to help for feed. I will give them to my in laws for free but that's gonna be it.
