I know this is an old post but it addresses my question very well. I have 9 hens production red and black Australorp all around 10 M old. Free range and no eggs. To determine if they are laying I followed all suggestions. I.e. 14 hrs of light, better food including laying crumble oyster shell...
I am about to plant both butterfly bush and Hops Vine in the back yard. I wasnt to make ure it is ok for goats (2 pygmy and 1 boer mix) to eat both plants as they are esacpe artists and I dont want to poison them if they chomp on at some point in the future. Thanks
I have no roosters. I have an ocassoinally broody RIR. If I order fertile eggs right away by mail next time she is broody will I be able to hatch the eggs? I have crummy luck with the incubaotr and would love to see a hen momma some chicks around the yard. Also is there any way to induce broodiness?
I did call but they were rude to me. They said in a few weeks and they don't know what they get. "Just come in. I don't know!" Well snotty lady maybe I will shop elsewhere.
I only need 6 or so this year so I don't want to place a mail order. Does anyone know when Orschelns gets chicks in? I am specifically looking for Giant Cochins (TSC doesn' t get that breed) and I got 2 at Orschelns last year. I really love the Giant Cochins demeanor.
Thanks for all the wisdom. I am just looking for a way to use all this grain. It might not be a ton but it is at least 600 pounds of wheat. I guess I will just watch my girls and suppliment some. I just hated to buy layer pellets at $8 a bag when I have all this free.
Also since they free range I have found it impossible to collect eggs. They hide them all over the yard & I find them weeks later. So egg production is not a big concern.
I just got a ton of bulf wheat from a friends farm. My hens are free range and if I give them free access to this wheat too do I have to give them anything else? They currently eat some commercial feed but mainly house scraps and bugs.
Thanks
Thanks so much for the advice. We had already come up with a similar plan (plywood cut out with Jigsaw) but I hadn't thought of the carpet to protect my windowsills or the strips on the ramps. Now if we can just get him to use it after we get all this work done. I figure lots of hotdogs should...
I had 3 giant chinchilla rabbits with about 14 hens. Just make sure the rabbits don't eat kerel corn if you feed any to your hens. The rabbits love it but it can cause impactions and even death. Good Luck
Lot of great info here. I just want to say make sure your fence is very sturdy. My boy (wether) pygmy has broken our 6 ft privacy fence in over 10 places. He just keeps pushing & pushing until he breaks the boards. The pen they live in is 1x2 weld wire and so far I have only had to repair it a...
Does anyone have any ideas on how to frame a regular dog door into a window? The ones built for windows are very expensive and I already own this one. I think I'm going to experiment this weekend and try to get it to work. Any advice would be great.
Thanks all. I will just wait it out I think. I think I really am not able to own any of my critters now but no one is sure if they were grandfathered in or not so I was just trying to not rock the boat. But dogs are way noiser than my little guy and I have found him a home to go to if any one...
A few years ago I had to keep these chickens in a wildlife preserve that they came and tested for West Nile ever month. Better the chickens than me. Bears and weasles and all manner of wildlife would try to get them but I got attached to them and loved the fresh eggs. (we had some pretty crazy...
I have Buff Orpintons which are not supposed to be good fliers, but it seems no one told my girls that. Even with a clipped wing they make it over an 8 ft privacy fence. So I say live with some nibbled veggies. You'd probably never eat them all anyway.
I have a Rooster Dilema. I live in a subdivision and we were recently annexed into the city limits. I'm not sure where I stand with all my critters legally (we went to city council and we were told not to worry but given no official answer) Anyway I haven't had a rooster till now out of...
