I've always had pine shavings in my coop. I've decided to now go with sand. It's been a couple months and I sift it twice a week and sprinkle DE after. But it really smells. It actually smells worse than the shavings. How can I cut down on the smell?
I received my order from the hatchery. I cant tell them apart. They also gave me some extras and i have no idea what they are. The first pic is an extra one. I was thinking light brahma, but not sure. The second I think is a lavender orpington, the 4 th pic I think is a blue laced red wyandotte...
Rooster is BCM and the hens are EE, Naked Necks, Welsummer and Golden Comets. 14 out of 16 hatched. Sadly one died this morning. It was weak from the start though.
I have a Speckled Sussex pullet who is friendly but shy. Usually if I pick her up she squaks like it's the end of her world! If I kneel down she will come up to me, but as soon as I put my hand out she runs. She is at the bottom of the pecking order. She is now almost 20 weeks and for about...

So I'm gonna try to hatch again! I'm going with local eggs this time instead of shipped. Hopefully I will do better this time. This time I got my eggs from Sharron who also gave me some good tips. Thanks again Sharron!!!
I'm having trouble figuring out what is going on with one of my eggs. At day 2 I candled and it had a small black spot looks like its floating around in there. It didn't smell so I left it in there (none of the other eggs had this). Now at day 5 I see veins in there I couldn't see them before...

I have 2 silkies that are losing feathers only on their stomach. One only has a few feathers missing, the other one has no feathers at all on her belly. I have DE all over the coop and run. I searched them for mites and lice...couldn't see anything. My other 3 chickens are fine. The silkies are...
Hello everyone! Is it possible for my silkie rooster to mate with my golden comet and red star hens since he is smaller? Also if it is possible, will I be able to hatch those eggs out?
Hello everyone! I'm new to this site and this is my first time owning chickens. They are almost 5 months old and my rooster keeps pulling on the comb of one of my hens. He only does it to her and it's like he is trying to shake her or something. Is this his way of keeping her "in line?" Thanks...
