I would bet on both being pullets. That said, I had to wait until my handsome fella was almost 4 months before I was sure he was a roo, that lovely cushion comb Brahmas have can be deceptive.
I'd also say either buff or a buff/light hybrid. I have a young roo that looks mostly like a light brahma, but his hackle feathers are very lightly tinted buff.
I have a similar problem. I have a large flock of ducks (20ish, haven't counted) plus a pair of geese. I plan to buy a large stock tank this winter when I have everyone corraled in a smaller pen and set it up with, at a minimum, a spigot and hose at the bottom to make draining and cleaning it...
I have a large mixed flock, my oldest ones are a female Mallard, a female buff, a male buff, and a male Pekin. We kept three of what they hatched last year: a female buff colored, a male mixed buff/mallard coloring (he's very pretty 😆) and a male Mallard colored. We have added new ducklings...
About the same age as yours. I got him in April when he was perhaps a week old. I alsogot three barred rocks (was told they were Lav Orps 😆) and three RIRs. Lost two of the RIRs and one Barred to a stray cat. They were all supposed to be pullets though so I was quite surprised when one...
I picked up a Russian Orloff from Tractor Supply. I'm reasonably certain it is a rooster now and am wondering how noisy of a bird they are. I would like to keep him but my neighbors (I live In town) work late hours and I dont want to be waking them up at 5 in the morning. I can build him a...
Two years ago I purchased two ducklings. One is a female mallard who lays regularly for about two months each year before stopping. The other is a buff who has never laid an egg yet has none of the identifying traits of a drake. So is it male or female.... Because my mallard hen is trying sit...
Yeah, I know I let them go quite a bit longer than is suggested but I'm glad I did. Weight after butcher was somewhere around 10 lbs for all 6. Meat was tender and very juicy. I wanted them to reach their full growth, not just standard butcher weight. Happy to see the other suggestions. I'll...
Good point with the cornish x. I had six last year and butchered them at about four months and they were just starting to crow. Which was funny as hell, since it sounded more like a squeaky mouse! I unno, though. I'm not a big fan of cornish x. I think they are ugly and stupid. I suppose...
I live in town and would like to raise a few meat birds next year. Living in town means I can't do roosters. Could I feed large breed hens the same way I would roosters and still get the same amount of meat on them?
I got 3 RIR and 3 Golden Sex-Links this year in April. They just started laying two weeks ago and I've got nearly three dozen, almost medium sized, eggs already. So happy!
<---SHE LIVES!
So ... I haven't posted here recently. I would like some help though. My mother really likes the Phoenix roosters, and she was going to get one through a friend who knew someone who was trying to rehome one . . . but the roo got out of it's pen and never returned. So now, I'm...
This may have already been stated but the cost of raising meat birds can differ significantly from keeping laying hens. Meat birds do tend to eat more per pound of body wieght than egg layers, in my experience.
I'm looking for Black Jersey Giant or Brahma hatching eggs for the December Hatch-a-thon. Brahma can be any color, but must not be Bantams. Looking to spend no more than 20 - 30$/dozen, including shipping.
Well, goslings are doing good. The little one seems to have been adopted by our adult pair, the goose is sitting on a nest right now, so we think that Papa goose thinks one of their eggs hatched early. the little one follows him around all day. The two big ones spend most of their time during...
Ok, everyone, I have a bit of a story to tell you. about a two weeks ago, my mother answered a FB post in our local area, someone was looking for a home for two "ducklings" that had been dropped off at her husbands work place (he's CA Fish and Game). The original owner had received them as an...
I have a few OEGBs around to help with an ant problem. This morning one of them fell into the duck pond. I took her in to dry her off and found swelling and dried poop around her vent. I cleaned it up but now it kind of looks like her vent is blown inside out. WHAT SHOULD i DO?!?!
