What exactly CAN I feed my chickens?

Very good to know, thank you! I heard once, if you'd give it to the pigs, you can give it to the chickens. But it seemed weird giving them things like milk or meat! But no, I wouldn't give them anything really bad or moldy. Thanks very much! I will try some new scraps! My sink trap will be happy. :)

What exactly CAN I feed my chickens?

I keep hearing you can give your chickens "table scraps" but I know there are certain things they can't have (certain veggies, etc). Just how much of the "scraps" can you really give them? Like can I scrape the plates into a bowl for them, leftover hamburger and all? Or just the leftover...

    24 weeks and no eggs?

My girls were 29 weeks on Monday, and still the only eggs I'm getting (so far as I can tell; they all look exactly alike) are from Rachel, the white leghorn. My RI Red and Ameraucana are being MIIIIGHTY lazy. Start earning your keep, ladies...

And yes, what's amazing to me so far is that this will be EVERY. DAY. That's so coooool. :)

    24 weeks and no eggs?

Thanks. :) And oddly enough, I think all of it so far is just my one leghorn (and one more this morning; have to check again at dinnertime, she's been in and out of the coop nesting all afternoon). Not sure the other girls are doing anything yet. Rubber egg...lol.

    24 weeks and no eggs?

And wouldn't you know it - I went out just a bit ago to feed them and found 3 pearly white eggs in the corner of their coop!!!!!!!!!!!!! Yay!!!!!!!!!

I totally understand the questioning the gender!!! lol I've said that out loud. I can't wait to see it!!

    24 weeks and no eggs?

Glad I'm not the only one! My girls are now at 28 weeks with no eggs. We even thinned out our bunch (9 hens in not enough space) a couple days ago, and will be moving them to a nicer coop once the roof is on. Hoping that moves things along; at the moment they are NOT earning their keep!! :)

    24 weeks and no eggs?

I'm glad to hear that others have had issues with egg-laying, and that it happens all of a sudden. I have six at 25wks (3 americaunas, 2 RI reds, and 1 white leghorn) and NO EGGS. I also have two Buff Orps (but we think one is a rooster) at 21wks and a barred rock around 19wks. I'm not expecting...

Buff rooster lying down, definitely wet, maybe hungry?

Update: We got him inside that afternoon and has been in almost 2 days now. He's acting better (if maybe a bit cramped; he's a tall guy!). He still sleeps a lot, and is definitely drinking more, not sure he's eating much. Wonder how long the girls were keeping him from food and water... Now...

How many chickens are you housing in here? It looks *about* the same size (footprint) as mine, so I'm wondering if the tenants number about the same. :)

Buff rooster lying down, definitely wet, maybe hungry?

It's been raining for almost a week and a half here in Maine. My 8 girls are doing fine, but my one Buff rooster Jude seems to be suffering. They're constantly protected from the rain, fed every morning, given water. The floor of their run is ALWAYS wet with mud, but the girls seem to be okay...

    Hanging cabbages

Thanks for posting this; just what I needed to know, too! Someone just tying a string around it didn't seem right... :)

    Hello from Maine!

Greetings from the far northeast. :) We're one of those little in-between "farms"...about a third to a half an acre, mostly taken up by house and trees and driveway. But we have our happy little nest of 9 in the backyard, currently housed in a big, old dog house, but (very) soon to be moved to...

How long before they lay eggs?

Thank you for this exact post! Just what I was looking for. My best friend in Arkansas who has tons of chickens had told me (based on their age when I got them) that my chickens would start laying at the end of August. We don't have them in their permanent coop yet, and at the moment I haven't...
