Hi all, just wanted to show a couple of pics of my soon to be new additions to my homestead. They're Nigerian Dwarf Wethers, the first 2 are brothers & were born 4-25-14, the last little guy was born on Mothers Day, 5-11-14. No names yet. Hopefully I can bring them home about mid July.
I could use some advice, I have a 1 1/2 yr old Silver Lace Wyandotte that has started acting strange. Her comb & wattles are nice & red, but the last few days she stays by herself when I let others out to free range, she stares off & acts like she doesn't know what to do, she just stands &...
I was told GRITS. The ants love it & take it back to the nest, they eat it & supposedly swell up & die, but not supposed to hurt chickens & can be used around/in garden.
Sorry about your boy. First question, what type of fencing do you have? I would suggest lining the pen/run with 1/2" hardware cloth about 3' up from ground & out from edge at least 6 or more inches, this is to keep your babies from putting their heads through & anything from reaching in &...
Glad it worked out for you, but, you don't know me or how "imposing" I can be, that being said, I had issues with neighbors dogs UNTIL I started reporting them to law enforcement & animal control, now NO more issues. I'm just saying that there's more than ONE way to handle situation, ONLY the...
You're entitled to YOUR opinion, I'm entitled to MY opinion, calling me a hot-headed reactionary is NOT cool or necessary, just because I disagree with YOUR opinion. READ, what all the OP had to do to get this beast off of & out of the coop that it BROKE into, PLUS the fact that the beast broke...
Sorry, but,I TOTALLY disagree. This person NEEDS to be reported NOW to both local law enforcement & animal control, due to the fact that the beast broke INTO YOUR property & coop, killed your chicken(s) & tried to harm YOU, it is now considered a livestock killer & a DANGEROUS ANIMAL, it can be...
Thank you, of course, if anyone can learn from this, at least some good has come from losing my girl. I had just let my girls out for their evening run, around maybe 6pm-6:30pm here in SC. I USED to totally free range, but after losing a LOT of my girls last year to foxes, coyotes, hawks & a...
So sad & bummed out, I lost one of my girls, tonight, a SLW about 9 months old. Not sure what got her, but I'm guessing fox/coyote. We live on 10+ acres surrounded by woods & have had "issues" in the past from both. Haven't had any issues since last summer, but kinda looks like they may be...
X2 The fact that this dog has drawn blood on your animals has made this dog a danger to the rest of your livestock. Contact animal control or law enforcement & report this animal, if it has tags, better yet, because then law enforcement or animal control will contact owners about their animal...
As a precaution, I'd wash injured area with a mild solution of epsom salt & warm water, just to sooth the area & help against any infection. Also keep your baby in a warm safe area, with low lights so she can rest, make sure she has plenty of food, water & treats & keep an eye on her.
Rinse the wounds with a very mild solution of Epsom Salt & warm water 2-3 times a day & put some Neosporin (non-pain) or any antibiotic (non-pain, anything with "statin" in it) on the wounds, keep them in a warm, quiet area away from any others, just make sure it has plenty of food & water avail.
X2 Totally agree, sometimes when irresponsible owners are paid a visit by animal control or law enforcement, it suddenly wakes them us, especially if they get a nice hefty fine for not controlling their animal, plus they get "advised" to keep their animal contained or lose it.
My sentiments exactly!!!! My DBF & I refuse to make our place (10+ acres) look like a penitentiary because irresponsible dog owners can't or won't control their animals. We do NOT tolerate any stray animals on our property.
I understand where you're coming from, I too have lost several of my girls to dogs. I had to build a large run for them for that very reason, but I do let them out in the afternoons, BUT ONLY when I'm out there with them, I also, have a .38sp & a 20ga shotgun with me at all times as well...
Totally agree with other posters about it being the stupid dog. With a fox, the chicken disappears, dogs leave bodies. Report this to your local law enforcement and animal control, plus, you want it on record that their dog is killing livestock & also find out what your legal rights are, so if...
There are SEVERAL posts on here on training dogs to leave chickens alone, check them out.
My suggestion would be, to put pups on leashes anytime they're outside & anytime they show the SLIGHTEST interest in chicks, scold pups (I would also only do one pup at a time) or just say NO or leave it...
I've had a similar experience. Last Sept, I had a 4 month old Silver Lace Wyadotte attacked by a pack of dogs. She had all the feathers on her back pulled out & 2 gashes on her back where the dog had grabbed her, after I rescued her, I brought her in the house, washed her wounds with a very...
