introducing 5 wk old chicks to one broody hen

Turns out one of our two hens was a rooster. . . So our friend and local hatchery offered to trade him for two 5 week old chicks. So we did. We only wanted one since it's just me and my wife but she said you want at least 2 to be buddies during introduction. So now we have one 9 month old and...

    hen isn't laying eggs. . .

We have two hens that are 9 months old or so. Long story short, one hen adopted us so we bought her a Rhode island red for a buddy when they were chicks. The one that adopted us is laying beautiful eggs nearly every day but we have yet to see the RIR lay. However once a week or less a weird ugly...

When can I feed my chickens layer feed?

I ran out of regular feed just as they turned 6 months and it didn't make any sense for me to buy more when they only have giant bags and I only have two chickens. In good news, one of them is laying! Little round tan ping pong ball sized eggs. Not sure which but I suspect my RIR. I bought...

When can I feed my chickens layer feed?

We have a RIR and a mystery chick that were born around Aug 8, 2012. Neither of them are laying yet but by stereotype the RIR should start laying around next month I think. Is it too soon to start feeding them layer feed? I've seen other people mention in the forums to just supplement regular...

    Insulated waterer?

Winter is coming and I have been flirting with the idea of somehow making a nipple waterer out of a small insulated thermos or cooler jug of some sort to keep the water from freezing in their coop. Has anyone ever done this? Could one get a nipple to attach to it well?

    What is she?

She has 4 toes on each foot. She's the same size as the 5 week old Barred Rock chick we just bought. She doesn't have the poofy cheeks and beard of an Ameraucana. I suspected a game bird just because her adult feather coloring is so different from other chicks/chickens I've seen, but she has a...

    What is she?

While doing yard work the other day I found this little bird in my backyard and my wife said we could keep it! So we're going start a small brood in our backyard. We were told by an "expert" that this chick is a female but she was clueless as to what kind it was, she speculated that she might be...

    New small brood

While doing yard work I found a chick in the yard. After hours chasing it around i finally caught it before the dog did. No one seems to miss it in the neighborhood so now we got her two sisters and will have a small brood. The chick we found has a few scabs on her back and her head quickly...
