    Pennsylvania!! Unite!!

Ours were hatched and shipped at the end of September, so they're four and a half months old. I know that they're old enough to start laying soon, but I don't know if they'll start now or if they'll be slightly late starters because of the cold and dark weather...I'm watching for eggs just in case.

    Pennsylvania!! Unite!!

Hi, I'm from SW PA, in Beaver County...about 30 miles outside of Pittsburgh. My husband and I have three Barred Rocks who haven't laid their first eggs yet. We're watching, should be any day now!

Can I put young pullets from garage to coop in middle of winter?

Thank you, Indiana and Chicken Pickin. Well, we put them out in the coop, but with the bottom closed for now, letting them in and out the door manually as they get used to that part and their new home. We did hook the light up out there for now until they get used to more space and the cooler...

Can I put young pullets from garage to coop in middle of winter?

Thank you, Indiana, for starting this thread, and for all who answered. We're getting ready to put our 10 week old Barred Rock girls out into the big coop this weekend as the garage is getting stinky and they're getting restless in the baby pen. I just wish I'd read it a week ago so that I'd...

Faded comb. . .beginning to molt?

Thank you for this. Now I know why three of our gals aren't laying, have faded combs, and are acting unusual. What a simple solution...BOSS will be added ASAP. I love this forum!

    Hens not laying, why?

Thank you for this, Sumi. That helped a lot. One of our girls has started laying again. Hopefully the rest will start up again also. It's been a tough year with the heat and all too, and it doesn't help perhaps that at this time of year we left all of our animals in the care of two teenage boys...

    Hens not laying, why?

Thank you for this, New2chicks. I was looking for answers as to what's normal for the molting season regarding feather loss and also egg laying. Since our girls were too young to really molt at this time last year, this is my first time going through this, and it's been startling to see one of...

Can I put my chicks outside?

We can't move them out to the coop, it's too small to add another enclosure for them. It's going to have to wait until they're old enough to defend themselves. For now, they're comfortably ensconced in the garage in a pen we made for them and we can bring them up in the house in the plastic bin...

Can I put my chicks outside?

LOL...no, I don't. Sadly, can't really do that either...however, I did take it as a cold signal when they all flew up on me and took them back inside. We'll wait for Indian Summer or for them to get a bit older to take them out again. Thank you.

Can I put my chicks outside?

We just got new peeps two weeks ago and they're starting to get their feathers, but still have a lot of down. The temperatures here have dropped down to the 50s in the daytime, but my husband wants to take the babies out to run around in the yard for a few minutes a day now. Is it too early for...

how long does it take to lay an egg?

Aha!! Thank you, that explains our suddenly very low egg production since our girls are molting right now. It's been a rough year for eggs with the heat and now molting season. We're getting extra peeps now so that we don't need to buy any more eggs, guaranteed, once they start laying...and they...

    Hello from PA

Hi, everyone! I'm a new member here, and relatively new to owning chickens. We (my husband Steve and I) currently have four Buff Orpington's, and have 3 Barred Rocks on the way...all hens for our own egg consumption. It became important to us to get our own chicks as we learned what mass egg...

how long does it take to lay an egg?

Quote: I didn't know this either. We supplement their feed and free-ranging with scraps when we have them left over from things like making a salad. My husband used to feed them sweetened treats like sugary cereals, but now we don't have any of those so he can't. Occasionally we feed extra...
