We raised 16 chicks and had one Blk Langshun that was half the sz of all the others so we called her Bitsy or half pint. But she was fietzy, held her own, always huddled in amongst the others, pushed her way to feeder etc. precious little thing. But she would not grow her feathers or sz like...
Not sure since they are with momma hen but maybe try the vasoline on chick's butt route and put Bragg's Apple Cider Vinegar in the water. Good for everyone, so couldn't hurt. You only use 1T ACV/gal of water. Hope it solves problem
The day after they arrived I had to treat 13 of my 16 baby day old chicks for pasty butt But I only had to do it twice (2 days in a row). After washing all the pasty stuff off their butts I rubbed the area with a coating of vasoline which they proceeded to try to "clean themselves of " but...
We lost a RIR this week. Again just found dead. Just like the others, everyone was fine one day then the next day one laying dead with no apparent reason. So from the original 16 we are down to 12 and they will be 11 weeks old tomorrow. We lost the first two when the chicks were less than a...
Well we have one inch of snow on the ground and its in the teens here. But our girls are completely feathered out so we are planning on putting them in the outside unheated coop tomorrow. We are wondering if we should put a heat lamp in there for them as they have never been in temps below 50...
Oh they are looking so good! And I know what you mean ... We need ours to go outside soon too. Our basement is a huge dust pile! But it is sooooo cold here in the mts ..single digits tonight. We already heat the basement and heating an additional coop would cost us even more. But they seem to be...
Where do you live and how cold does it get in Feb at night by you? We have very cold temps here in the mts. Our hens that are about 9-10 mo old stay in their outdoor unheated coop (with run) in temps down to about 10 degrees so far this winter.
We have 13 chicks that are 8 wks old that are in...
Yes it was a sad surprise that we are clueless since she was a big healthy bird like all the other 13. Funny thing is though we have one Black Langshun that we call Bitsy bc she is half the other girls size and won't seem to grow any tail feathers. She is more duck like than chicken like! But...
We lost one of our baby chicks last night in our basement. No apparent reason. Everybody's been running around like normal. Hubby just found her dead by the feeder this morning. He only checked on them once yesterday morning so we don't know when it happened. We went out to church and Chinese...
Thx. Actually only had to rewash bottoms of 2 the next day after the initial treatments of 13 chicks. I'd put Vaseline on their bottoms and added 1tbsp of ACV (Bragg's) to 1qt of water which I continue to do but now at 1Tbsp to 1gal. Worked like a charm. No issues and all growing like weeds!
Here's a pic of my hens vent area on her bottom. I just noticed it today. I haven't been out to the coop lately as its been rainy and I've been busy inside cooking for the holidays and taking care of company. But Hubby's been out there every day building another coop but he just did not...

She's a Black Langshan.
Sadly I lost a little blue Laced Red Wyndotte chick on Sunday (she was 6 days old) ..2 days after losing the other little RIR chick. But the remaining 14 have thrived and grown really fast this week. Today everyone is 12 days old They all seem great so I'm optimistic...
I'm so sorry your little ward died. I lost 2 of my 16 new chicks lady week too and I was so sad. But my remaining 14 are doing really well so I am hopeful they will all continue to thrive.
Thank you for the education. I use ACV in my chicks water and once I get a non metal waterer for my hens I think I will start adding it to theirs too. Thankfully haven't yet had a need for the other two products. :)
Well, I'm no authority on his handicap but I do know he has to eat & drink as he is at or past the point of having used up his yolk sac nutrition (72 hrs). Have you put his beak in the feeder and waterer? Try an eye dropper for the water if he won't drink. Did you give him the green Jello like...
I've read that if all they do is huddle under the heat source together then they are too cold. If they all are as far away as possible all the time then they are too warm. And if they scatter about coming in /out and all around the heat source it's just right. Kinda like baby bear huh...
