Thanks Peeps. I added 5 more day old chicks to the group and left her in the dark for 2 days. She started out accepting the two rejected chicks and then started pecking at them again. I decided to remover her from the brooder area and take care of them myself instead. For 2 days she stayed next...
Donrae, that was my thought also. It wasn't the best timing, but the chicks needed a new home and so I went for it. Next time I'll think twice.
Centrarchid, I followed your advice. I did a bit of reading about imprinting and found it very interesting. The mama hen would call to the chicks...
She's been broody for about a week, She went broody about 3 weeks ago and I broke her of it and after about a week, I decided to put some chicks under her since we don't have any fertile eggs.
I placed 4 chicks under Speckles, our mamma hen, yesterday and she accepted them and today she is aggressively pecking 2 of them away from her. She was an excellent mamma with her adopted chicks the 1st time around, so not sure what's up this time.
The 2 she has rejected are the chicks my...
So glad to hear that things are working out for you. One would think that neighbors would be happy to have such a beautiful setup next door. I know I certainly would.
Wow, it's hard to believe that neighbors can be like that, I'm so sorry that you have to go through all of this. I would also suggest that you take pictures of the rocks where they landed and any damage that happened from each rock, That way it's not "just a plate of rocks", but a progressions...
So good to hear that it worked out! I have another hen that has gone broody and I will be making a broody area in our coop for her, that way the babies will be around the big girls from the beginning.
My DH and I started with 6 chicks and a ready made chicken coop, which can be seen within the fenced in area.. Then chicken math took a hold of me and now we have 15 girls. So we have been been converting about 7' of our 15 x 8' shed into a coop for them.
We live in the Seattle area and I want...
Thanks for the advice. I closed the little coop off yesterday morning and they have been with the big girls, they even slept on the roost with them last night. Loving raising baby chicks with a broody hen, so much easier.
Our Ameraucana has been a great mama to 6 chicks which range in age from 7 to about 9 weeks old. They are in a smaller coop and run which is inside the bigger run. I have started letting them out into the big run and now mama is trying to take them into the big coop. Should I be concerned about...
Found one of our 5 wk old French Maran chicks trapped and being pecked on by our older chickens. Her leg was picked bare and raw, but not bleeding and doesn't look like they broke the skin. We cleaned her up and put blue kote on it.
This evening she is eating and drinking, walking with a...
