One of my girls has been laying super soft eggs for a while, despite the abundance of oyster shells they all get. Every once in a while she will lay an egg that can be used, but for a couple of months now, they are so soft that they break in the nest. Of course, this has lead to egg eating...
One of my hens has always had a 'bare' spot around her bottom, but recently some of my other hens have been loosing their feathers around their bums too...
Anyone know why this might be happening?
Thanks so much,
Denise
I've been taking a cup or so of scratch and soaking it in water over night. The hens love the hydrated scratch. I think I will leave it longer though, after reading these posts. I notices that the wheat in Nature's Best Organic Scratch has already started to sprout from sitting in water...
Ok...it's nearly December and the days are quite short now. I've been giving the girls extra light, which comes on at 5 am. They are all laying most days, sometimes 2x.

I've had ducks before in an effort to manage the bugs, but I wasn't really set up for them. After a 2 year break, I got chickens this last spring to help with the overpopulation of bugs in my organic yard, since I refuse to use chemicals....
I didn't think that they would be so easy to care...
The days are starting to get shorter and my young hens have just started laying eggs....can I extend their egg laying by adding light to their coop and setting it to come on a couple of hours before daybreak?
Thanks,
Denise
