I wonder if it would be too big?
I tried the zip ties a while back. You need to keep an eye on them as the leg keeps growing. I ended up cutting them off.
All of the 9 survivers are still alive and doing well.
I do almost the same thing as wsmith but the last time I buchered I did it by myself.
I did 26 X-Rocks and averaged about 15 mins each (6 1/2 hours). About 45-60 mins of that time was used to get everything ready and then to clean-up afterward.
I use 2 ice chest, 3 killing cones (homemade)...
Ok, Done Deal!
Nine out of ten did fine. The last one did not. That's 90%, a good improvement from my last try of 50%.
I found the "valley", or place to cut. Once I was sure of the right area it got easier. I found it important to cut closer to the spine. A little lower and you lose the ribs...
It's been a while since I've been here.
The 1st time I tried this I had 50% success rate, 2 out of 4 survived. I did them at 6 weeks of age. Butchered at 10 months and was excellent eating.
The 2nd attempt I tried at age 4 weeks. I DID NOT starve them for 2 nights and 1 day (only over night...
I was also wondering if a rat started the wound and the rest of the flock just found a weak chicken. I'll see what happends after the Big Day, tomorrow. This will definitly make more room at the feed trough
I plan to process all the browlers and any bird with blood on its beak.
I have been...
I have already raised the roost today, but this is happing while they are off the roost.
I just found another 1 dead. Not one of the 2 that are under the heatlamp. Now I see blood on some of the others beaks. I also checked all the others and found 1 more with the samething starting at her...
From what I know about chickens, When they are roosting, they will just stay on the roost. I guess they think it is the safest place.
What gets me is I have 2 birds that are almost identical with holes in their backsides.
I think I will try to get the roost up a little higher off te ground...
We had foxes the last time we had chickens.
I called Wild Life and Fisheries, They told me I could not shot or trap them.
So I called Agriculture and Forestry. They sent out a State Trapper he wore a badge like a State Trooper. This guy was like Danial Boon a real woodsman. He walked around...
Yesterday we had 1 dead chicken. The vent was bloody so I thought maybe the other chickens got to her after she was dead.
Today, I have 2 birds that did not come to the feed trough. When I checked them I noticed that it looked like the skin and flesh had been eaten away From the vent to the...
Ok, I just made my 1st attempt. I had a 50% sucess rate. I had two survive out of four. The 1st one I lost was cut too close to the back bone and quickly blead out. The other, I just couldn't find the testie and it started bleading after a lot of probing. I think the cut was to far back on that...
I plan to take the plunge myself. Everyone, localy that I have mentined it to has asked if I knew how to do it. My responce has been, I will in about 3 weeks. My birds are 2 days old and I have my antique kit from e-bay.
I like the idea of purchasing some practice roosters.

Well McMurruy said my chicks would be here by Saturday, they were right . They arrived this morning. I started the feed soaking yesterday and it's not bubbling yet. I went ahead and started them on it anyway and they are eating it. I'm not sure if I have enough ACV in it. I am using the 5 gallon...
Beekissed,
My name is Ken Cook and I'm new to this forum. I have been reading the thread on ferminting feed. It has been about 12 years since I raised chickens and had CxRocks and several other breeds, so I know what the smell is like with the dry feed. I want to try this method of ferminting...
I'm thinking that having the netting used on the tractor, instead of regular chicken wire would make it easier to move everyday than pulling the fence down and putting it back up every 2-3 days.
I guess the real question here is could it be installed on the tractor succesfully without...
The places that sell the mesh also sell the box to charge it. As for alternating the + and - on each wire, I think all the mesh is1 circuit and the Negitave post on the box goes to the ground spike.
I have not been able to find the mesh locally, but it can be ordered with free shipping. I hate...
The groumd wire comes off one side of the Shock Box, I think. If insulated wire was run to say 4 points and spikes put around 4 sides, say 1 foot long, I think that would work.
From what I've read you can disable the bottom strand. To me that means each strand is spliced together, so I should...
When you put the sheet rock up, are you going to use the blue stuff that is used in bathrooms? I think it is supoost to be better for moisture. I would think you may want to be able to hose it out from time to time.
That will be one fine chicken house or if you get out of chickens, maybe a...
