Comment by 'Pipermom' in article 'Reasons for Tossing Out Your Indoor Brooder and Start Raising Your Chicks Outdoors'

Thank you so much for the information! We had debated starting our new chicks outdoors with a heat source but I was a little anxious about the temperatures (we live in the deep south and shiver when it gets down into the 50s). I'll take a deep breath and get them outside this weekend :)

What do you do with excess roosters?

Freezer Camp. And leave them until you forget their names. 😉

    ➡ Quail Hatch Along🥚

Oh my goodness y'all I am so excited! I've not posted on here much before, but I have been following things people have posted. We have been raising Buff Orpingtons for several years and after reading about quail we decided to branch out a bit. We read what y'all have shared about incubators...

Can one hen live alone (at least for a while)?

We lost one of a pair of hens several months ago (I think it was before Christmas) leaving us with just one. Our lone hen has actually done surprisingly well since then. I am getting ready to put the new flock of chicks outside this week and will probably introduce her to them fairly soon.

    IS THIS NORMAL????

If you are particularly concerned about ticks you might think about getting a some guinea hens too. As long as your spread isn't too large, 2 or 3 will wipe out your tick population! Regarding nesting boxes, that will usually keep the girls laying where you want them to, but there are...

    IS THIS NORMAL????

Where we live there are too many coyotes, possums, armadillos and dogs to be able to free range. We have to have a pen with netting over the top (did I forget to mention the hawks and owls?) and electric fencing running the perimeter....which adds its own element of excitement! Growing up in...

    IS THIS NORMAL????

OK, my hens are not unique; whew! I am down to 5 hens who are finishing a very protracted molt. We were getting an average of 4 eggs/day from the girls and are now getting 1 on a good day. We did have babies back in July ~ our broody hen did it all by herself! ~ and we had them in a tractor...

    Integrating 16 week old chicks

Thank you all so much for the help! We put them in with the "grown-ups" after dark last night (the one time I am glad dark comes so early here these days ). I got up several times in the night to check on them . At one point my big, not-so-nice roo (I have bruises on my leg from his spurs!)...

My husband and I moved to a rural area several years ago and decided to try and be a little more self-sufficient. Our first set of chickens were some kind of a cross-breed and were VERY aggressive. We were not sorry to finally put them in the stew pot! We now have all Buff Orpingtons; 1 roo...

    Integrating 16 week old chicks

I have a small flock of buff orpingtons. One got broody in July and hatched out 3 babies for me. Unfortunately Mama died when they were about 10 weeks old. They are in a tractor near the pen with the "big kids" (1 roo and 5 girls). Two of the 16 weekers (I know one of them is a roo and I...
