Long time chicken owner but never had anything like this happen. Our new Salmon Faverolle (3 months old) has lately had problems walking and running and upon closer inspection it looks like her leg is bent in (either broken or dislocated?). Since she was a chick she was always laying down a lot...
So we have three hens an easter egger, a rhodie and a silkie. Our Silkie is quite broody and spends all her time sitting on nothing in her box. We would like some new chicks, do you think we could try giving her a fertilized egg? I'm fine if it doesn't hatch but it might make her happy for the...
I had that same worry, but paper towels don't cause splayed legs in the slightest. It mostly occurs with newspaper because when newspaper becomes wet it gets slippery causing the chick's legs to splay; however, when paper towels become wet the moisture is absorbed, so they can still grip the ground.
Hi there:
I would not use shavings because they can be pretty dusty. The fumes from cedar shavings are pretty bad, so you're right in not doing that :) I use paper towels and they work very well because they are super absorbant and you can change them often (unlike shavings which are a pain to...
The coop used to be our garden, so seeing the girls running around amongst the green was really beautiful. Of course, they grew up and kind of trampled everything (as chickens do). I know this is to be expected but I was wondering if there is any way to make the run a little more green or maybe...
I have three chickens, a rhode island, an easter egger and a silkie. We've started to get eggs (YES!) and we think that they are
from the silkie because they are consistently tiny and perfectly shaped. Regarding the photo, keep in mind that my hand is small. Also, we've seen the silkie spend a...
Do you think she is already laying and hiding her eggs? Also, since it is winter here is there anything I should do to make sure she will actually lay?
I would for sure get an Easter Egger- I have one and she is so beautiful! Very smart and a natural leader. She is curious, sweet and loves to hop up on my shoulder but the fact that they are pastel coloured eggs is reason enough. Although since she is still young I haven't seen any eggs yet ...
Thank you very much! It's strange, I'll sit down and they will hop onto my shoulders and peck at my shoelaces but as soon as I reach for them, they scurry away
