I don't think half the people who give dyed chicks as Easter gifts realize these chicks are going to grow up and need care. They don't think beyond the fact that the chicks are cute and a novelty dyed pretty colors.
Once it's pipped you may have to help, I had to help with two of mine last week that pipped on the wrong end. It's not hard to do and today I can't tell which chicks I helped, all 14 are doing excellent and are growing and acting the same.
We've never had a problem with the coyotes either, but since they're out at night when we're usually sleeping I just don't want to give them a chance to do anything to the chickens.
We have coyotes here in Florida so our chicken run is covered with chicken wire and the five foot fence is also buried in the ground to prevent digging under.
We had the same problems with four Australorp hens and we used Oxytetracycline too, we put one tablespoon in a gallon of water. I don't know if they got better because we gave them back to the breeder, but he was going to give them Qxytetracycline with the same dosage.
Well after the Halloween hatch was a bust, I tried again. I had three Buff Orpingtons and a New Hampshire Red hatch today and have 8 more eggs that have pipped. Yey I did it.....well they did it!!
