I do know that the Black buzzard is not nearly as shy as the turkey vulture. I had about a dozen of them sitting in the driveway! Our ornery RIR rooster "Elvis" was out there posturing and raising hell at them. I came out of the house to see what the ruckus was, and got within about 10 feet from...
Up until recently, all my losses have been attributable to domestic dog packs. Recently, I have another predator that has nearly wiped out my small flock... either hawks or Black Buzzards. Since the first of the year, I've lost 6 of 8 chickens. No remains have been found, or tracks, just a few...
The buzzards I'm talking about aren't the normal red headed "turkey buzzard" or vulture you normally associate with buzzards, but a different breed that does seem to be a problem, from what I've googled.
The gregarious black vulture roosts, feeds, and soars in groups, often mixed with...
I'm wondering if buzzards will take live chickens. We have had an awful lot of black buzzards lately, in fact I lost count at over 100 in the trees in my backyard earlier this spring. I'm wondering if it's buzzards, or hawks.
So far, I have had 4 chickens disappear this year, all during...
I think I have a hawk problem too. In all, I have had 4 chickens disappear this year... A RIR Rooster, 2 of my barred rocks, and yesterday, my newest hen, a production red. The last 2 were within 20-30 feet of the house, one in the driveway... at least that's where I found all the feathers. No...
Geeze... y'all have such great luck!!!
I've only had 3 out of 20 survive.
Not gonna give up, but think it's too late in the season to try again. Winter is just around the corner.

AWESOME!!!
Congrats on the hatch!
I would think about isolating the hatchlings from the rest of the flock... no telling what the "Others" will think about the chicks.

Start of day 23, and still only have the 2 hatchlings... looks like I have 9 eggs that are duds. So out of 20 eggs set in the last month and a half, I've got 3 chicks to show for it.
This has been a little disappointing.
I guess I'll try again in the spring.

The best way to tell is to "go in manually" through the vent. Can be 90-95% accurate.
I just don't know what I'm looking for in there!
I do it the tried and true way... put them in the coop, and let them sort it out for themselves! You'll know what's what in 6-8 weeks! LOL

The "day care" coop
This is where Blackie has been staying during the day. Tomorrow it'll probably have to spend the night there, since I plan to move the new hatchlings into the "nursery".

Blackie is still doing great, and growing like a weed! I let it into a "day care" coop during the day, but still put it in the nursery at night. It may have to start staying in the coop at night now, since I've had 2 of the 'bator eggs hatch so far.
Still not sure what kind of mixed...
I'd say you are doing all you can. Maybe go buy a small foam cooler and put the heat lamp in there with the egg, and the lid on it. A couple of half inch holes in the lid for ventilation if the lid fits tight. Watch the temp, and be patient.
Read where one poster used a heating pad.
