Pining silkies - should I add some frizzles?

Oh my. They are sooooooooo cute! I love their little veggie box.

Pining silkies - should I add some frizzles?

Also great advice. Thank you! Betsy is almost always broody. She spends about 2 weeks laying and then a month being broody, so it shouldn't be too hard to find a good time to tuck some eggs under her.

Pining silkies - should I add some frizzles?

I have a 3.5yo mama silkie and her two 2.5yo babies. There used to be 3 daughters, but one of them had to be put down because she kept prolapsing. The mama silkie and the top bully daughter are basically glued to each other. The other two sisters (when the other one was still alive) always stuck...

Things are getting curiouser and curiouser.....

My (silkie) hens always lay in their nesting boxes, but there was a month there where I kept finding the eggs in the middle of the coop. Sometimes they laid in the middle of the coop and sometimes they laid in the box and then pushed the eggs into the coop. Once I found an egg downstairs in the...

    Chickens sleeping in

I just realised a possible cause. I had 4 hens - the mama hen and her three daughters - and they would free range in the garden all day. One of the daughters had to be put down in October last year because she kept prolapsing and another daughter went almost permanently broody immediately after...

    Chickens sleeping in

It has been mostly in the mid 30s this month. Last month was very hot with quite a few days over 40. It doesn't cool down much at night so it gets pretty unbearable. I live in Adelaide where we often experience heatwaves of days over 40 and it's pretty difficult to keep chickens alive. I put wet...

    Chickens sleeping in

Thank you, and to everyone for your ideas. The chicken carer is coming tomorrow (she comes to clean the coop and check the chickens), so she should be able to have a good look at them and provide advice.

    Chickens sleeping in

Hmmm. We are in the middle of summer here in Australia where it is very hot. Maybe it is just too hot to bother moving (I often feel the same way myself).

    Chickens sleeping in

They seem pretty healthy. They eat crumble, shell grit, sunflower seeds, corn, spinach, grass and tomatoes. They also have an occasional mealworms treat and free range all day so whatever bugs they find too.

    Chickens sleeping in

Has anyone else experienced their hens sleeping in? My chickens used to be up at the break of dawn screaming loudly for their breakfast. Lately they sleep in, refusing to get up when I open the coop and sometimes not even coming down for breakfast. The other day they slept until midday. Right...

Bald spot - moulting or fighting?

I'm glad there isn't any blood. Probably just moulting after all. Sounds like your chooks have a good set up. Enjoy and stay cool! Cheers.

Bald spot - moulting or fighting?

I saw on the news tonight your terrible weather and bushfire over there. It sounds like you're new to chickens? As you would be aware, we get the horrible heatwaves here in SA too. Chickens really struggle in temps above 28 degrees. I freeze bottles of water and put them in their drinker, cover...

Bald spot - moulting or fighting?

Hi Potato Chip. My hens are currently moulting again, although nowhere near as bad as last time. I think they do it now in summer because it takes quite a while for the feathers to grow back, so they are probably shedding them now because of the hot weather to try and cool off a bit. Have you...

one hen laid in the yard today

I think I'm having a similar problem. I have 4 hens and 3 nesting boxes. The mother hen is still laying in the box every day, but her three daughters (who have laid in the boxes every day for more than a year) haven't laid any eggs for at least a month. I'm wondering if they're laying in the...

Determined rat won't quit eating my chicken feed--please help!

With my first henhouse and run, I dug up a 6 inch base for the entire coop and run. I covered the ground in wire mesh and stapled it to the cage base and then shovelled all the soil back in over the top of it. I did that because I wanted the hens to have a soil base so they could dig in the dirt...

Bald spot - moulting or fighting?

Are your hens hatching eggs? When my hen hatched, she pulled out her feathers on her tummy to both feather the nest and keep the eggs warm. Yours looks quite bad though. Have you checked thoroughly for mites (they only come out at night)? If she's itching from mites, she could be pulling her...

Bald spot - moulting or fighting?

Wow! I haven't seen pinless peepers before. Doesn't it stop the hen from being able to see food in front of her? Also, good news! Lola's pin feathers are sprouting feathers so she should be back to normal soon. Now I'm just struggling to keep them alive in this ridiculous heat - 40 degrees...

Bald spot - moulting or fighting?

UPDATE: More feathers lost and pin feathers growing, so definitely moulting.
