We over-seeded our entire yard and our dormant garden plot with 25 pounds of rye grass this past November. We had the greenest yard ever and our chickens and goats were the happiest ever. They've had tender young greens all winter. South Texas does have a few advantages. It's still going...
One of the nicest things I've noticed since getting chickens is our lack of scorpions. We've always had a problem and this year? Nada. Could be coincidence, might not be. And boy was is hilarious to watch them when our yard was covered in caterpillars last spring! This past month we finally...
Plus, it is fair to warn you, what goes in must come out...and a lot comes out of a Cornish. Too many birds in a small space and they become very soiled with all that output. So, is it all clear as mud now?
X2!!!
holderh - if I were you I'd eat those suckers! You know - you are doing the right thing by slowly building your resistance to harmful bacteria just by raising and eating your own birds processed on your own place. Dare I say it? Yes I will. Your processing "mistakes" most likely still produce...
"We had Cornish cross meat chickens and they just do not have the personality and lovability that a laying hen does.
I am attached to my layers but I am always ready for processing day for the meats."
I am in total agreement here. I'm always on my husband to get those suckers processed...
We have so many chickens that they have to share names. The only one who doesn't is Princess (aka - world's ugliest chicken). She has the distinction of being the only chicken out of our first batch that we didn't eat! (Shoulda named her LUCKY!)
4 of our Ladies Cluck share the name...
I am craving me some smoked turkey legs like they sell at the County Fair. These are so tender they just fall off the bone. Problem - I don't know how to cook them. Anyone out there got a great recipe for making these. BTW - I know my way around the kitchen so you don't have to spend a ton of...
I took some pictures of our resident broody hen - Princess - a.k.a. The Ugliest Hen I Ever Seen. She's molting right now so her ugliness has increased exponentially. These pics just don't do her justice. Anybody got an idea of what she is???? The science lab at the school where I teach...
I'm getting the 15 rare turkey special from Cackle and splitting it with a friend. We're also splitting an order of 15 BBW's. So I'll end up with about 15 turkeys total. The thing about the rare turkey special...its a surprise. Could be a bust, you never know.
Hey ya'll!!! I'm from Seadrift ~ a little-known jewel here on the coast south of Houston, north of Corpus. I'm reading this having dejavu. My husband tries to act like he's just indulging me when his buddies ask him what he's doing this weekend and he tells them re-doing a coop for me. HA...
I have 10 Aussie ladies in my laying flock right now. I have 14 more in my chicken tractor that are only 2 months old. I love them best of all the breeds I currently have!
