    Woods-style house in the winter

The last one is my first coop (8x12) which didn't work out, even with a side window, a front window and ventilation under the eaves. The chickens got frost bite, and it was frosty and damp inside. I'll use it for raising chicks.

    Woods-style house in the winter

I used T1-11 4x8 sheets. I got my windows online from Home Depot. The upper are awning windows just sliders, but I'm having my builder remove the screens and put hardware cloth over them on the outside. A little rain came in a couple times on the inside ledge but it dried up quickly. The...

    Woods-style house in the winter

Here is my 10x20 Woods' style coop built in the summer of 2013. It faces SE. Notice the low windows on the sides. The chickens love being able to look out in three directions while they wait for me to let them out. We had -9F and -18F in November and February, respectively. There were many...

    Rooster Advice Needed Please

I had three roosters from an August 2012 hatchery order--two EE's and one BA. The one EE and BA were the friendliest birds, and my friend would sit and pet them for hours snuggled in her lap. We didn't realize at the time that they were roosters, and we didn't realize that "Rusty" (the other...

Do all roosters leave chickens with bare backs?

I have 17 hens with one rooster. There are 5 Leghorn; 5 Australorps; and 7 EE. They all run free in every direction. The hens don't stick with the rooster like they used to with the bigger roosters. I will get rid of him as soon as an option develops.

Do all roosters leave chickens with bare backs?

I got rid of a mean EE rooster and then a large Australorp rooster because my hens were getting bare backs and scruffy necks. I have a small gentle EE rooster left. I will only get rid of him if there's no chance he won't be continuing this problem. I don't want the hens to molt in the fall...

are your dogs and chicken friends

I have a 12-year old German Shepherd who will chase anything that moves. He goes berserk at the summer sheep through the fence. A few times over the years he's gotten into them, never killed or injured any, but it about gives me a heart attack. When I got chickens last year, I had to put him...

    soft egg

I had a soft shell egg laid on clean straw in the sheep barn. I took it to the house and it smelled like sheep. I broke it open, and it smelled like sheep. So I would not use eggs that have a soft shell after that experience. I think they have a hard shell for a good reason. Maybe you could...

Discovered an easy way to keep meat birds cool!

It's supposed to be 95 again today. I'm going to try this. I set up a simple sprinkler yesterday, but they didn't go near it. They look so miserable with their mouths open and their wings spaced out. They do free range and can find a variety of conditions, but 95 is still hot, even out west...

I'm new--how many posts before I can post my new coop?

Thank you. My computer is a 2003 version, and I am using Firefox. But I was originally able to post my "first coop" picture when I signed up. I'll just try posting until I reach that "magic number."

I'm new--how many posts before I can post my new coop?

Thank you. I didn't want to necessarily add it to the "Coop" section, but I just wanted to be able to add pictures into a post or to send a PM to someone, but it said I didn't have permission. I thought I remember reading that there was a minimum of posts before you can add pictures.

I'm new--how many posts before I can post my new coop?

I've looked over the site and can't find the number of posts needed before you can attach pictures. Can someone help please? Thank you.

    A **WARNING** ABOUT BLUE-KOTE!

Just had my first encounter with Blue Kote and wasn't sure I should have used it for a chicken. I found this site and was really concerned with the "WARNING." But I guess I did the right thing. Luckily it's only my one hand and some on my yellow work jacket. I had a favorite hen with a bald...

How to Tell a Fertile vs INfertile Egg (Pictures)

I have 19 hens and 2 roosters. A visitor saw the roosters and said, "Now you'll get blood spots in the eggs because of the roosters." I was worried, so I came where I knew I would find the answers. Even though I only read through page 11, I will know how to respond next time about roosters...
