    Sablepoot/Booted Bantam?

I'm thinking that some sablepoots would be nice variation to add to my small Pekin flock. Does anyone have some who can advise, temprement, eggs and size compared to other bantams like the Pekin? I especially love the lemon millefleur, porcelain and buff mottled.

Good chicken to go with Pekins (Cochin Bantams)

I am upgrading my 5 pekin gals to a 8x8 shed and 8x8 outside run. I'm thinking of eventually adding a couple of larger chickens that lay a few more eggs or slightly larger eggs. I like the fluffy chicken look so I was thinking Orpington bantams or Brahma bantams. Are these much bigger than Pekin...

    My Pekin "bubbies"

Yes I'm in the UK. They are very sweet, the buff mille fleur one is exceptionally friendly and let's you hold her and eats out your hand. The barred one is top hen, she's very calm but they all know she's boss. I love how fluffy they are and I've also had a couple of eggs from them so they are...

How Many Eggs Did You Get Today?

    My Pekin "bubbies"

I have introduced my new Pekin ladies to my current two and now have a flock of 5 lovely Pekins. They were loving the sun we had today. I had to put the black one in a cage for a while cos she kept getting too feisty but shes now settled into the pecking order, just took her a little longer than...

    Snugglesafe?

Ok thanks. Ives used a basic hot water bottle with sawdust on top for one night but your right about letting them get used to the cold so will only do it on really damp freezing nights.

    Snugglesafe?

Hi, I have a flock of pekin bantams and we've been having dreadful weather, snow, rain, damp and chilly! My hens have been trying to snuggle together in the nest boxes to get warm rather than in the main coop. They've even resorted to sitting on top of each other, three in one box if they can do...

    Anyone managing a closed flock?

Thanks, I've managed to get in touch with a fellow chicken keeper in my area who has allot of experience and she's offered to help me nurse them and tame them up so I'm very positive at the moment. Thanks for your help!

    Anyone managing a closed flock?

I seem to have it more under control at the moment. Just the odd sneeze from one hen every few hours. I think I need to keep them dry, warm, tonic in water and good food and fingers crossed it will subside. Ill take a look at your thread cos I think that ill need to manage my flock very...

    Needy chooks?

Hiya, every morning I let my girls out and give them their breakfast. I also sprinkle some grain and seed around in the hopes they'll forage for food throughout the day. I also visit them at tea time and chuck them a treat as well as saying good night and locking them up at nightfall. This has...

Can someone clarify "closed flock" to me?

What happens if the first hens you buy have a respitory disease. So the flock is already compromised health wise? Do you close it off and practice good bio security to protect other people's livestock rather than your own? I'm worried I may be in this situation and I'm confused whether they can...

How to ensure chicks don't have MG?

Hiya, I possibly have MG in my flock. I'm trying to manage it but in the event I have to take the awful decision to start over how do I ensure any hatching eggs I buy or small chicks are MG free? Thanks

    Anyone managing a closed flock?

Hi, I suspect my hens have MG. They all came from the same poultry farm but different flocks within the farm. The Sussex hens started with symptoms on day two, the following days the Pekins joined them. They looked like they were going to die, crusted eyes, not moving, wheezing and mucus, they...

Heard a few sneezes! Is it coming back?

Thanks for the advice. I also suspect bronchitis or MG. I will keep trying to deal with the flare ups. Hopefully though it won't be every time they come off antibiotics though cos I can't keep them on it forever.

Heard a few sneezes! Is it coming back?

Ok thanks. I will try them with anti biotics one last time and if it doesn't work I may have to let nature take its course.

Will standard size hens hurt a bantam hen?

Many many years ago I had a large fowl buff Orpington called Molly with two silkie bantam mixes called gold tops. They were seriously tiny things, smaller than pekins or any bantam I've seen but they didnt get pushed around by Molly. They were quick and light on their feet, had a feisty attitude...

Heard a few sneezes! Is it coming back?

They all came from same place, but the Sussex were in one pen, the brown pekin in one cage, the black in another. It was the Sussex hens that started infecting others they got sick first.

Heard a few sneezes! Is it coming back?

They are all doing frequent small sneezes now. No wheezing, no mucus and their eyes look ok but the soft sneezing is every minute or so. They are all bright and alert and eating. What would you do, start them on antibiotics again or leave them to it and see who if any survive? Very upset that...

Heard a few sneezes! Is it coming back?

Hiya. They appeared to make a rapid and full recovery on the antibiotics, if it was viral wouldn't the drugs of had no real effect? I have noticed some pigeons who nest in a tree near my chooks have had two deaths. They didnt look to have the same symptoms though, one was lame and lost slot of...

Heard a few sneezes! Is it coming back?

Hiya all my chooks came with a very bad respitory infection which I cleared up with amoxicillin. It's been a week or more since they've been back to full health and off the medicine however this morning I heard the odd sneeze from one of my smaller chooks. Is it coming back so soon and should I...
