Update: I checked with NC Ag Dept, and the American Livestock Breeds Conservatory (which they are listed as "endangered" on)...everyone agreed that it's perfectly legal to sell Cayugas. Having all the lit'l ones sexed this weekend & will post an ad. Thanks ya'll!
Thanks Sumi & Sally, I wanted to check back in a give ya'll an update. 18 out of that batch hatched, & it was my first time. (And theirs! They had a clutch...but weren't sitting at all.) I think I started w/ 30 eggs but many were over 14 days old in collection. Pretty much any eggs that...
Thanks so much guys! I've searched & searched on the internet...but can't find a single thing that backs it up. I'll try to make some calls to NC Ag Dept tomorrow when I'm off work to fact check.
A funny for ya'll...alll the drive home from feed store before I could Google...I'm visualizing...
So, I'm wondering if there is anyway to find out if it's illegal to sell Cayugas? I have 18 ducklings that I incubated, ready to go at 6 weeks...and checked in with my local feed store. The owner said he had 3 adult Cayugas for sale & someone told him he was breaking the law by selling them...
Thanks so much for the tips! The waterers with resevoir looks perfect, and I only work half a day tomorrow, so looking forward to trouble shooting this issue!
How soon can I put ducklings in the outside pen? Right now they are in the house under a heat lamp, and I'm managing the mess ok, but they are running out of water (with 2 of the bottle types) in between I leave for work at 6:30am & return for lunch at noon. Same in the afternoon & overnight...
So, in counting the day after eggs were placed in incubator, yesterday was 24 days. They started chirping, rocking, and some had visible "crack/holes" in shells & upon a quick candling, I see that most are internally pipped very well. Went ahead & put them in lockdown. The holes are not large...
Here is a video of day 24 (last night), when I checked I was super surprised by the egg sac enlargment, chirping, and internal pipping as well as cracks in egg shell! We went into immediate lockdown after I filmed. I had 24 out of 30 with movement 2 nights ago. Tonight, I may have lost 6 out of...
Just wanted to update eyeryone, here is a video of day 24 (last night), when I checked I was super surprised by the egg sac enlargment, chirping, and internal pipping as well as cracks in egg shell! We went into immediate lockdown after I filmed. I had 24 out of 30 with movement 2 nights ago...

My 1st time & I have 24 cayuga duck eggs on day 24. I just found that 3 of them have poked cracks & holes in their shells! Upon candling, I see about 80% are internally pipped, moving & chirping. I've taken them out of turner, but my question is how to lay them on the wire? I read that the...
Does anyone have any links or advice on where to find pics or diagrams of appropriate air sac development in duck eggs? I've looked & looked & can't really find anything according to days.
Many thanks!
Thanks Amiga, Utah, and everyone. These females had no interest whatsoever in sitting...so I borrowed an incubator. I couldn't eat the eggs after letting them get to 30 in the nest, so it was worth a shot. I wanted to give ya'll an update on my new "duck adventure". lol Hopefully this link...
Hi everyone! I fell into this poultry thing when someone left 6 cayuga ducks on our farm, unattended & uncared for. (3 females, 3 males) I've taken them over, and have been reading & reading. They're about a year & 3 months old, and it started with 2 females laying eggs in one nest. Then...
Thanks Amiga, I did see that thread, and was just looking for a few more opinions. I don't think Redwoods are so easily available or in my price range. I browsed the "Formerly Known as Hatch Day" thread (for about 40 pages), but got bogged down with specific conversations between individuals...
Thanks Utah,
Any specific incubators you've had good luck with? (In either price range). I can turn, etc...but am reading that best to get a turner just for the fact that less intrusion into the incubator temp/humidity.
Ah, thank you Amiga! I will look into the other info you mentioned. I think that with this nest, best to take out maybe all but 1 & mark it. Keep a better eye on things. How often do you see a duck sitting on eggs if they are viable?
In general, I would say that none of the hens look very...
So, let me preface this message by saying that I love this website! I've been able to find out so much info, on my own. But I need some specific help now. I apologize for how long it is.
My situation is that someone was keeping ducks on our farm & has abandoned them. Long story short...
