    New Mexico

this is to luckyclucker, post #23 I had the same problem with dogs, so followed the dog home, he had one of my chickens in his mouth, and he got both barrels of my 12 guage shotgun. Told my neighbor I'd get anymore of his loose dogs same way. No problems after that. If the dog gets in your...

    Dang Dogs

Hi Katie; I had the same problem, leash laws not enforced, so I used old coyote traps I had, and it took a month or two, but I cleaned up the problem by placing the traps around my coops and runs. Traps were anchored deeply in the ground on metal stakes. Lots of folks found their "pets"...

    No red in my yard

Never had that problem, but it sounds really comical just imagining what goes on at your place. Mine just attacked the wife, and kids, but they showed a lot of fear of the roosters. I'd just pick em up and scratch em a while when they tried me out, and they hated that, so left me alone, no...

Thinking of adding bantams to my fleet

The seabrights need to be almost full grown before putting them with the full sized guys and gals. Also, seabrights are not good setters, but if you have setters of any breed you can stick the eggs in with the others and they'll be fine, at least mine were. A beautiful breed, good luck.

chicken question - rooster or not to rooster...

Chickens without a rooster isn't the same, they're not only a hoot to watch, but do protect the hens. Then if you decide to raise a few to replace aging hens, you can do it. I'm predgeidist, as I love roosters most of all. Free ranging won't make much difference in feed consumption with a non...

Any one else in/was in 4-H

My grandkids are in 4-H, raising pigs, I was in 4-H raising steers and heifers as a kid, and my own kids were in 4-h also. I'm now a poultry leader and plastic models leader in the 4-H program in apache county AZ. It's a great program for young people, and fun as a leader in helping the...

    Coop insulation question

Heck, just find some old hay for sale somewhere, farmers have old hay bales that are no longer fit for cow consumption, then stack them around three sides of your coop. Insulation plus, and inexpensive.

    Barb wire

IF it was me, I'd put chicken wire over the top, and the electric fence is a great ide. The darn loose dogs that have to investigate everything would likely not come back after a bite from the fence. Great idea there. I had neighborhood kids coming over to gather my eggs for me, and...

    I am building a 6 x 20 coop and I had a thought which I am not certain

dividing the coop is a good idea, only I'd move hens that are setting into a seperate area so the just hatched ckicks will be away from the rest of the flock with their mother.

    Hay bales for insulation

Well, I put up a box wire fence around my coop on three sides at the ranch, then filled it with old hay not suited for stock feed. The sides were about two feet thick insulation wise, and filled it to the roof, and it worked great for many a year. Was a nice snug little coop. You can't go wrong...

    Tractor with fold out run?

Heck, I'd just build a second tractor large enough to set next to the one you use, and be able to bolt or screw them together temporatily. If it was me, I'd likely need the second one pretty soon anyway. I'm an addict where my chickens are concerned, a couple is never enough, and so many...

    small and large breeds together?

I don't understand all the problems mentioned here, I raise bantams, and do it for the roosters. It's fun watching them mature and see what beautiful color patterns they get. I've not had all the problems mentioned here. Just know how much I love my roos.

    Wing clipping

No way would I ever clip my bird's wings. Even with leash laws, people let their dogs out at night, or even in the daytime to run, and my birds have been attacked many a time and flight is often their only defence or way of escape. these same people are those who passed the leash law in the...

    Gardening and Chickens

Chickens are very benifical in my garden, at times we are or have been unindated with grasshoppers, but my bantams keep my lot free of grasshoppers. When the garden is first coming up, the young sprout is great eating for chickens, so I keep them locked up in the run until the garden gets up a...

Are banty roos as loud as standards???

It dpepends on the individual bird. I've had bantams all my life, love them to death, and love to hear em crow in the mornings, or whenever. My lot is two acres, and is zoned agricultural, so I have a milk cow, horse, and the bantams as well as egg layers. Drives my neighbors crazy each...

    Any model makers out there?

Hi jubylives, that was a B-24 liberatoor, and a darn fine plane, I've built a few in 1/72 scale, and have several kits yet to build of it. I would like to build an electric model of it one of these days in RC. nice to know I'm not a loner so to speak. Been real busy so haven't had time to...

    Worm Farming.

To Onebuggirl, question, why not earthworms? I use them for fishing, and they work great. They are a natural worm in my garden, and do well there. I have wanted to raise more of them, but your comment makes me curious, please enlighten me. Thanks
