I love this guy! He always stands proud, makes sure the hens don't run out too far. He patrols on the roof of the barn, back and forth and back and forth. When he thinks a hen is getting too far away, he tears after her like a rocket and herds her back to the barn! I thinks he's just gorgeous...
A coyote! In broad daylight! I was doing my chores, and heard a ruckus behind the barn. I went to check it out and there's a coyote trying to catch a chicken! He's got 8 so far. I ran him off that day and he hasn't grabbed anymore. Anyone know of good coyote deterrent?
I have a sweet little hen, the children's favorite because she loves being held. But the other day, a rooster went to mount her and caught her comb, it was bleeding at the time but I thought it would heal on its own. Now, I don't know if she's scratching it herself, or if the other birds are...
I thought she seemed a little more mellow with the kids. I've been reading about when hens are ready to lay, and this one is all about the squat when we go to pet her. She also stretches her neck out, my kids think she just wants to cuddle!
I have chicks that are 8 weeks old. I was outside and heard squawking inside the barn. I went in and saw that one of the little hens had her foot stuck in some wire and was hanging upside down. I got her down and she's ok, but what I found interesting was that all the other chickens ran over to...

I went to my dads to pick up the chicks he hatched for me. I'm just trying trying to figure out the cross I have. The hens are red stars and these are the roosters. The black Roos have rose combs and gold feathering. Does anyone know what breed they are?
Here's another pic of the white rooster...
i will be getting my first chickens in about 3 weeks. i will be converting an old barn into a coop with a small run. but i also want to free range the chickens. i worry about predators around here, we have coyotes, hawks, foxes, raccoons, opposums, and the occasional dog that people drop off. i...
Hey ya'll! I'm in Oklahoma City, and live on 10 acres. We've only lived here a few months, but we are really gung ho about growing our own food. My dad has hatched some chicks for me. They actually hatched yesterday, there are 35 and 4 more eggs that haven't hatched yet. So I'm expecting about...
