    ducks and grapes?

I never thought about it until I saw this post, but I have never had a duck die from eating grapes off the vine. I would imagine free ranges they would not eat enough to harm themselves. Crazy, but animals are alot of times smarter than humans when it comes to free range eating.

    New Quail Cage

I have never experience any negatives issues with a male and two females, but we only keep them that way for a week or less....usually collecting a dozen eggs that we want from specific male/female combination. So there is no confusion, we separate females from males for 4+ weeks then chose...

    New Quail Cage

It is... you can see the float valve in pic 2 on the side. The pvc drops from 3" where the float valve is(for easy accessibility) to 2" and around the corner down the long side with watering holes. It is attached to a 6 gallon container that is filled off a 250g rainwater barrel.

    A&M's hatching

Congrats on the successful incubation. Funny about the youngin getting up early..... mine d othe same thing when we have new babies. I'm thinking of using that little trick to my advantage by timing my hatch/gestation due dates around when I need the kids up early. Maybe garden picking day! :)

    New Quail Cage

I saw a video on Youtube on a quail cage design I liked so I made on similar. I just added the auto water system and have the auto feeder done but not installed. The eggs roll out onto a catch area. The finished cage works well and thought I would share the results. I posted more about it on my...

    Opposum in the chicken yard,

I went out tonight to lock the chicken coop a little late and my dogs were going nuts. Long story short, a mama opossum was on the steps leading into the chicken coop where everyone was fast asleep. A few weeks ago we lost all but one egg from a brood hen who fought something off losing feathers...

    Just got my first egg.

Good idea, I have yet to hear my "male" crow. The man that sold them to me banded him when he heard him, but not a peep in 3 days. Waiting to see if I start getting three eggs :) Actually I an building a few cages and will vent check him when I place them in their new pen.

    Just got my first egg.

I purchased a trio of white Japanese Coturnix (Texas A&M) this week and got my first egg's yesterday. It weighed in at .6 oz. I'm trying to decide on an incubator, but if these quail turn out good I might just buy a group from the same seller to grow out. Hopefully I will learn a lot about...

    1x4 instead of 2x4?

I saw a youtube video of a guy using 2x2 scrap wood and it turned out nice. I think if you are going to add wood siding to help with the structural integrity then you should be good. I will try and find the video.

    New Duck Grow Out Pen...

Just wanted to post a pic of the new grow out pen we got up this weekend. The tin on the back wall is there because there is a compost bin behind the wall and it radiates heat. Also did a quick writeup on the blog if anyone wants more info.

Update: Duckling pictures Edit: All dead :(. Help! My ducklings are all dying!

First off I am so sorry to hear what you are going through. I am no expert, but will offer a few ideas to toss into the mix. First off, ducks need much less heat than chickens and those small plastic containers obsorb then radiate alot of heat from the heat lamps. I know you said there was...

    You Flocks favorite food?

We are planting more grazing forage for our chickens and rabbits this year. We planted what and rye for winter. For those supplementing processed foods with fresh forage, I was hoping to get some polling info on what is most popular. I thought about doing a poll, but there are so many options...
