Hey, everyone! I know this is an older thread, but I, too, came home tonight to discover one of my girls had died. I had 10. 5 RSLs, a RIR, 2 Barred Rocks, an Easter Egger and a Golden Polish. My 5 non-RSLs just turned 2 years old 2 months ago (maybe 3 years...I've lost track LOL) and the 5...
Just a follow-up to my post above.
Cleo laid her first egg after her molt on Sunday...of course, right after that post where I said she wasn't laying. Go figure! Her feather color still looks dull, but I guess that's just the way it is. Thanks, everyone!
Hello everyone! It's been awhile since I've been on...however, I have a question that I know you all will be able to help me with. I have now had 3 of my 10 hens go through a molt. 2 were pretty minor, but one, my Easter Egger, really lost a lot of feathers. They've all gotten their feathers...
Hi, everyone!
You all have been such a wonderful help to me, I'd like your advice/opinions again. I have a Golden Laced Polish who is and always has been very skittish (even though we keep her head feathers trimmed). As you can well imagine, she is at the bottom of the pecking order. She...
Let me first start by saying, I am impulsive. Being impulsive means I do things like go to buy groceries and see a Chicken Swap happening at the local Tractor Supply and turn in to go look. By the time I'm done buying my groceries, I've also purchased 5 new Red Sexlink pullets. Yeah...that...
She is definitely broody...AND moody. OMG! She displays a lot of the "normal" broody signs, but then she steers off the beaten path...daily. She'll come out of the nest box to eat & drink...the other chickens are out of the run by then and are free grazing in my backyard, so she comes out and...
Hi, everyone! I haven't posted in a while, but I do much research on these boards all the time. I have a Golden Lace Polish that has gone broody. No doubt about it, she displays all the classic behaviors. However, we don't have a Rooster, so there will be no chicks. Is there any harm in...
At 10 months of age, I FINALLY got my first egg from the last of my 6 ladies, our Golden Laced Polish, Ava. What makes this so special is that, on another thread, for the last 5 months or so, we've been trying to determine what gender she actually is. It kept going back and forth and...Now we...
Tricoglossus and all - Eureka!! The issue is now resolved once and for all. Ava is officially a GIRL!!! She laid her first egg today! It's white...the only white one of my flock. I know it's hers because it's white, but also because I got an egg from every one of my girls today...6 in all...
I tend, in my limited knowledge, to agree. She's a pullet. Here are the latest pictures...the best I could do right now. Forgive her "Hair" cut. We cut her feathers back about 6 weeks ago so she could see better and they're in the midst of growing back. I think I may cut them again. No eggs...
I ended up putting a piece of 1X2 on ours and that did the trick as well (for the most part). They apparently don't like as much bedding in their nest as I like to put in there, so I just let it go. They are, however, now ALL laying in the nest boxes which is great. I hope to add 4 more...
Good morning, everyone! Just wanted to update this thread with the news that I really have no update to give. Since we re-homed Red, the RIR Rooster, Ava is still the lowest on the pecking order (no surprise there), but she isn't constantly having to hide or spend her days running away from a...
SoManyHats, I'm with you. The article is interesting and informative, however, I found it peculiar that with all of the domestication that has been done with chickens, that the author would go back so far to justify his determination of what's "natural" for today's chickens. For me the chickens...
***NEW UPDATE*** I guess once a rooster is crossed, he doesn't get over it because ever since this incident he continually picked on poor Ava. So, Red got re-homed yesterday to a nice Chicken Haven/Rescue right around from where I live. We had a heck of a time coralling that bird and he cackeled...
I just had to rehome my RIR roo today...about an hour ago to be exact. I'm feeling a little bit sad, but he was picking on the smallest member of my flock and I couldn't watch that happen anymore. He's right around the corner from us with a bunch of other chickens. He'll be fine, but I'm...
Trico - what a pretty bird you have, too! It may be because of her age, but I don't see any of those things on Ava (wattles and such like on yours). Would Ava be considered bearded? I am learning so much from everyone...mainly that I'm not alone in wondering about some things. Many of us...
I've been averaging anywhere from 3-5 eggs a day since my girls started laying 5-6 weeks ago. Yesterday, I went out and found only one egg. Quite unusual, but I looked everywhere, even underneath their bedding as they've been burying their eggs lately, but there weren't any others. I went out...
Trico - here are a few. I hope they do well. I think I know...deep down..that Ava is a boy. At any rate, here they are. There will be eight. My understanding is you should be able to click on them to see the larger versions of them.
You can't quite tell by this photo, but Ava has the...
Honestly, I'm still not totally sure. Although I saw something on her head that can only be described as horns. After looking that up, the consensus is that always means male. I don't know much about this particular breed, but it also appears she is a Bantam. She/He is much smaller than the...
