A raccoon killed one of my hens last week in the hen house area. I now have two. I noticed that one had stopped laying...or so I thought. I have found a makeshift nest under a bush and that's where her eggs seem to be now.
The other hen doesn't lay yet but refuses to roost in the hen house...
Thanks but I can't even be sure that's her doing it. And it really only happens every 6 weeks or so. Wouldn't she be laying brittle eggs more often if she was really able?
We bought a full grown Rhode Island Red 4 months ago and she hasn't laid yet. They said she was about 6 months old when I got her making her about 10 months now.
From time to time I've seen poorly formed eggs (small, brittle) in the box but I can't be sure who left them there. As there have...
Thanks! I will consider the tetra because I now only have two chickens. I have separated them because the other was pecking at the injured ones comb =( =( =(
The farm store has Tylan but it's $60! They also have Tetracycline for $10. Will this suffice?
Will just a topical treatment suffice? Raccoons have nasty little mouths I know. =(
Thank you, is it okay to eat the eggs while they are getting antibitoics. Let me preface this by saying I wormed them with Albendazole a few weeks ago and still ate the eggs after despite mixed reviews of doing this.
This morning at 4am we found one of our chickens dead with the raccoon close by.
Today, I see that one of the other's had it's comb bit and some is missing. There is still blood. I am going to clean it up but I know the bird needs antibiotics.
Are antibiotics for chickens available from feed...
You're right about relocating but killing it opens up the territory for new critters to move in and compete for space. So killing it is a short term solution to a long term situation.
This sounds like a turkey vulture. I would put money on it. (I am an avid birder that worked for the National Audubon Society).
They are harmless and only eat dead carcasses.
Do not shoot birds with a bb gun. Or any animal for that matter.
They were white feed bags tied at the top. This guy must sell chickens regularly. I met his wife and she transported them from a carrier into them. But I think one of them was in the bag the whole time.
Legs were not bound or anything. I'm not advocating it or anything.
She is walking around...
I live in Portland where the weather is quite mild today. I just got three chickens who spend the morning in breathable bags in someone's trunk while I was at work. I met her at 1:30pm to pick them up.
I got a Gold Comet, a Rhode Island Red and a Plymouth Rock.
The Plymouth Rock Hen, about a...
