Chickens In The White House! How can we make this happen!?!?!

I would suggest trying to find the historical breeds that were used in the area in the past and go with that as your suggestion to the whitehouse for getting to have chickens. Also, show them how a garden with chickens around is a happy garden. Happier then those without.

    How Many Chickens?

The lady who I am getting my chickens from swears that the 4 square feet per chicken is too big. Especially in the colder months of the year. I have seen her chicken set up and I have to say that her chickens are very happy birds and they all fit in a little tractor. When I told her how big of a...

Need advice for a chicken tractor/coop I'm building

I totally didn't think about the fact that two rows of roosting poles(one on top of hte other) would result in chicken turd on the shoulders of the lower roosters! Hahaha, duh! As to the rest of what you said, thankyou! I intend to do the roof up proper with a sheet of plywood and insulation...

Need advice for a chicken tractor/coop I'm building

Well then I'll do it with 2x2s! I already got them so no need to rip anything. Well, I"m going to go for a 6x8 design which has the two 3x4x4 boxes side by side with nesting boxes running along the edges(over hanging out of the coop with a hinged sloping lid). One side will have the chicken...

Need advice for a chicken tractor/coop I'm building

Also, the coop will have a metal roof and will be fully weatherized. Given the size of the thing I am going to be taking back my 2x2s and getting a bunch of 2x4 instead. If I can't move it, I can't move it, and I might as well make it strong enough to stand up to some snow fall. I'm also going...

Need advice for a chicken tractor/coop I'm building

Ok, something I just realized, the coop is designed for 10 chickens. We're getting 15 expecting to get a bunch of roosters in there. By the end of chick getting time, we hope to end up with 9-10 hens and a rooster. But, going by what everyone is saying, I need 50 square feet for my flock. It...

Need advice for a chicken tractor/coop I'm building

Well, the chickens will have a run that will be about.....8 feet by over 20 feet that is totally enclosed, and they will be free to run around in there as they choose from sun up to sun down, plus we will be building movable runs that go over the garden that they can go in for crazy bug eating...

Need advice for a chicken tractor/coop I'm building

Hardly extreme. This year has been colder then most and we only got about 2 feet of snow and -20 degrees c and that didn't last more then two weeks. Well, the roof falloff is still kicking on the shaded side of the house, but otherwise all traces of snow are gone. Normally we have mild winters...

Need advice for a chicken tractor/coop I'm building

As the title suggests I am about to start building a chicken coop. We are planning on getting 10-15 dorking chickens in the spring and I want to build a nice little coop for them. So far I have a design that is like a rectangular box on its side with a sloped roof. The dimensions are 24 in...

Looking for a good Coop/run design that can double as a greenhouse.

That's totally awesome! You may want to consider finding a nearby member of your community who has cows or goats but needs eggs or produce and figure out a trade. I think a very big part of making green life work is working with your neighbors.

Looking for a good Coop/run design that can double as a greenhouse.

Thanks PeeplessinNC! That is by far the best idea I have seen for a chicken coop/run/garden area. Now I just have to convince the rest of the family that this would be best.....

How long do hens lay eggs for?

Well, I found a very good way of getting rid of old hens that just won't lay an egg, have them made into sausage! The family whom wee will be getting our chicks from in the spring( Dorkings!) said that they keep their hens for 3 years and then have them sent off to a local butcher who turns...

Looking for a good Coop/run design that can double as a greenhouse.

My family( extended included) is trying to really go green right now. Economics what they are plus our North American consumer driven mentality has lead us to wanting to do away with our consumer shackles and discontinue our wasteful ways. So, this means that not only do we want to have...

*sigh* looking for a free chicken dinner and just won't leave!!!!

You need to convince that beauty to find plumper poultry to poach! If you had crows or Ravens that nested near your house you would not have this problem. They don't take guff from birds of prey. My advice would be to throw rocks. Not big rocks and not hard enough to do serious harm, but after...

How long do hens lay eggs for?

Well thanks for the feedback guys! Especially luvmygirlsinAK! That is exactly how we live our lives. Organic stuff as much as we can, and healthy foods at all time. Organic dark chocolate for desert( because it is actually good for you!) and all that stuff. I'm stoked that I likely get good...

How long do hens lay eggs for?

Thanks indeed! So is that why everyone ends up with a fairly large flock? They don't to kill their hens every 2 years, and so end up just getting more? Do they ever stop laying all together? We are planning on getting some laying chicks this spring and I'm doing the research.

How long do hens lay eggs for?

I have heard that hens only produce enough eggs to be cost effective for a year. Is this true? Do you all raise new chickens every year in order to keep the eggs coming in?

Can you find Roosters that won't crow too loud?

Quote: The question isn't about how to get my dog to obey me, our dog is very obedient( I honestly can't stress enough how obedient he really is) and he will learn to deal with the chickens. What I want is a rooster that won't crow for no reason. we used to live next door to a family with some...

Can you find Roosters that won't crow too loud?

Quote: No worries. The chickens will have their coop and run all nice and secure and fenced. Hopefully it will be dog, raccoon, mink and....well that's it for predators we need to worry about here- proof. I trust my dog as long as I can see him. Out of sight and we know all too well that he...
