    PLANNED POULTRY GUARDING DOG

My pitbull Goose is my chicken protector. He does not allow them out of his sight. I love this because people that aren't familiar with the breed often view them as a dangerous or vicious breed. The vet says Goose is a great advocate for the breed.

Do I have a baby Roo??

My RIR has reached 9 weeks old, and now the roo traits are really coming out. I was hoping to find him a good home, but it looks as though he may end up on my uncle's dinner table. He's beginning to crow in the morning. He's also getting quite nasty, and pecking at my hand. I hear RIR roos...

Link to telling sex of Rhode Island Red Rooster and Hens

UPDATE: Okay, here is Patsy my RIR at 9 weeks. I believe she's the one letting out the terrible goose-like crow in the morning. I'm afraid she really is turning out to be a roo. Can anyone confirm my fears? Some keep telling me to just keep waiting, there's still a chance Patsy is a hen. I...

Do I have a baby Roo??

Oh wow! His comb turned red fast. He's a little guy, how old? This is making me feel a little better. Mine's comb is still colorless.

Do I have a baby Roo??

Not yet. I just posted this yesterday. I have been told by many it's still too early to tell. Sexing is supposed to be pretty accurate. I was told 95% probability the sexing is correct - obviously, we'll see. It seems a lot of people with RIR ask the same question, so perhaps it's just the...

Do I have a baby Roo??

Okay, we are at 7 weeks now. Thoughts? How accurate is sexing? "She" was sexed...

Link to telling sex of Rhode Island Red Rooster and Hens

I am concerned as well that my RIR is a roo. All of the chicks were sexed and supposed to be pullets. This is my first batch of chicks. How accurate is sexing? All of my birds are different breeds so I have nothing to compare my RIR to. I've been reading about the traits of roos and "she"...

Treat Ideas For 3 week old chicks?

Mine are the same age and love smashed up hard boiled egg (sounds morbid I know, but it's good for them) and tomato. With the tomato I slice a piece and lay it on a plastic lid. They just peck at it as they wish.

    Clipping Wings

I hadn't planned on it until someone else mentioned the idea. Will they typically wander (fly) away form their coop. I plan to have mine in a run as well once they are big enough to be outside, but I also thought I'd let them explore the yard when I am home.

    Place for chicks to roost!

I just purchased a doll-rod from the hardware store. I am keeping mine in an old dog cage so I just rested the doll rod on the slats of the cage. I've heard chicks don't generally perch until they are four weeks old, but mine have been very curious and started perching right at two weeks...

    Good treats for baby chicks?

I just mash it up with a fork and place it on a flat plastic lid in their coop. They go right for it!

    Good treats for baby chicks?

At what age do you give your baby chicks grit? I was told at the feed store it was not necessary until they were much older.

Do I have a baby Roo??

I recently acquired four chicks! I'm very excited to have my first flock. My chicks were sexed, so I'm hoping I have all pullets, but my Rhoad Island Red has me a little nervous. Her behavior stands out among the other chicks (all different breeds). At just two weeks, she is very full of...
