    BYC members in Massachusetts?

Yep and no pigs :) There is a clause stating you can appeal the rooster law - you have to bring a bunch of supportive neighbors and state your case - I know one person who did it successfully.

    BYC members in Massachusetts?

Yep - sounds like no one knows what they are doing - haha. The man I spoke with was the head of the Board of Health and he just said each city/town has it's own poultry regulations - never mentioned anything else, so as far as I know - no one other than my friends and neighbors know I have...

    BYC members in Massachusetts?

Hmmm - I never heard of this? I'm in Hudson - I called the Town Hall and asked the appropriate person who emailed me the town animal ordinances - he didn't even ask who I was or how many chickens I had or anything.

    BYC members in Massachusetts?

I"m in Hudson - here we can have as many chickens as we want, but no roosters. No other rules. I've seen people with chickens in Marlborough, but don't know anyone specifically - Just give a call to city hall and ask what the chicken laws are - For me I think it was the Dept. of Health - good...

    my pet chicken reviews

I got mine in the same batch as you - May 6? Mine (7 girls) are 20 weeks also - my gold sex link (golden buff) also laid her 1st egg at 17 weeks and has laid every day except 1 - the day after she missed she laid a double yolker - yes this freaks me out a little bit too - big burnout concerns...

    Green Mountain Soy Free Layer

Every time I go - the wonderful older man laughs at me and tells me to just get Purina - he thinks all the "organic" people are crazy :)

    Green Mountain Soy Free Layer

Great to hear! I only have 1 laying (6 are almost there - 19 weeks old). She started 10 days ago and has missed only 1 day (followed by a double yolk egg) - They love the GM feed :)

The Natural Chicken Keeping thread - OTs welcome!

There are definitely different schools of thought on natural plant estrogens in people/animal diets - the body metabolizes them differently - In my experience, flax is not a bad thing - especially organic golden flax :)

    Green Mountain Soy Free Layer

Thank you so much for your quick reply - I think I'll do that. Since I only have 7 chickens, I store the unused feed in the freezer in plastic bins, so doubling up when I buy feed and then mixing the 2 together and storing in freezer should work just fine. And thanks for relieving my calcium...

The Natural Chicken Keeping thread - OTs welcome!

Thank you for the welcome - and when I read back, I see you did answer my question - force feeding calcium (via layer feed) is not a great idea at anytime! Thank you - need to rethink this :)

The Natural Chicken Keeping thread - OTs welcome!

We've been having this canola - soy free discussion on another board. I just switched to Green Mtn. Organic Layer and here is what Eric who makes this feed said We do add DL Methionine to the ration. And it does help to keep the Canola meal to a minimum. Thing is, we are regulated on the...

    Green Mountain Soy Free Layer

Thank you so much for peeking in here and answering our questions :) My girls are just at point of lay and are totally switched over to your Green Mtn. soy-free. So far so good! Quick question - I'm not totally against soy, just don't want so much of it, so I'm thinking of getting one bag...

    Green Mountain Soy Free Layer

Mine are almost totally switched to the GM soy-free layer (was mixing with remainder of my starter feed for a gradual changeover)- got my 1st egg 5 days ago at 17 weeks so must be fine :) I add lots of extras - pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, chia seeds, meal worms, lentils, ancient grains...

    Green Mountain Soy Free Layer

Yes - they have not updated online since changing the formula - it is now 16% and has fish meal. They still add the methoinine - in order it goes - corn, flaxseed meal, wheat middlings, field peas, calcium, canola meal, alfalfa meal, whole grain wheat, fishmeal (menhaden mechanically extruded)...

    Green Mountain Soy Free Layer

Mine are 15 weeks old and haven't started laying - I just bought this bag of GM soy-free to have on hand and start mixing with their grower feed - I have a sex-link that is getting bright red comb/wattles and is squatting so I think she may be an early layer :) It is now 16% according to the...

    Green Mountain Soy Free Layer

Yes the Green Mtn. non-soy formula now contains fishmeal - I didn't know that Countryside had fishmeal - I thought it was all pea protein which is why I went with Green Mtn - haha. They are probably both very similar.

    Green Mountain Soy Free Layer

What was the reason you ended up using Countryside Organics instead of Green Mtn, - just curious since you had asked the original question. My feed store carries both and I went with GM - mainly because I heard that the CO had lots of dusty waste - not sure it that's true. And I liked that GM...
