Need advice on rooster vs. hen - rooster beating the hen

I have a three year old hen that is acting broody. She is clucking and ruffling her feathers. The rooster, who is otherwise is a very nice guy, beating her at every opportunity. And he is smart, when he sees that I'm watching him, he does not do it, but the minute I turn the corner, he is on her...

What chicken breed lays the biggest egg?

I had Cayuga ducks and they are relatively quiet. But when they quack, you can still hear, just like any duck. they also laid a huge egg, kind of bluish in color.

    Chickens as composters

I have a crazy idea: can I put spent plants from my garden into the chicken coop, on the floor, for them to compost it? I have deep litter on the floor, wood shavings. But because I don't spend enough effort to maintain compost pile properly, thought chickens might help me a bit. Yes? No?

Perplexed with my duch incubation failures

No, I have not calibrated it. Will do that. But - you guys think automated turner is not a problem? I think I read here that eggs should lie flat. But I don't think they hand turn at the hatcheries?

Perplexed with my duch incubation failures

I have a Hova bator with the fan. Temperature is stable at 99.5. Humidity around 65%, and 75% for the lockdown. Using an automated turner. First batch - 4 ducks out of 12 eggs. Now (day 28), 1 duck peeped but died. The rest are not even peeping, that's out of 8 eggs. Eggs are from my peckins...

Does anyone have a strain of Orpingtons that are truely dual purpose

Are these weights in live weight or dressed? I imagine, live, because you need to know who to cull. How do you weight a chicken?

    OMG! I think I have a broody!

Guys, I think I have a broody ! A hen has not left the nest for two days, and it looks like she is sleeping there even during the day. I have never had a broody before. What do I do??? Should I put water and food next to her? Or let her manage it herself? And after (and if) she hatches the...

Chickens bleeding through the nose/mouth, dying

Thanks for the link! Yes, some of the hens have visibly pale combs. One that is sick certainly has very pale comb. The other one is just a two month old chick, so cannot tell. I'll get some vitamin K tomorrow and try to force it into them. I tried giving them spinach today, but they did not...

Chickens bleeding through the nose/mouth, dying

Quote: Originally I suspected rat poison. Our neighbours all of a sudden became hateful of our chickens. I thought they might have thrown some rat poison pellets over the fence, which will be easy to do, it's a chainlink fence. But would not that cause blood coming from the anus, not mouth? I...

Chickens bleeding through the nose/mouth, dying

Quote: There is no coughing or sneezing, just quite a bit of blood comes out of the chicken's mouth. I witnessed when one died. The other two incidents I did not see, but saw blood on the roosts. I only added pekin ducks from McMurray, about 7 weeks ago. No other birds, I incubate my own.

Chickens bleeding through the nose/mouth, dying

Found a dead hen on Sunday. Then another, young rooster, died in front of me (separated from the flock), bleeding through the nose or beek. I put them on Duramycin yesterday. So far no more deaths, but two chickens bleeded on the roost at night, I found blood on the roosts. They are both hardly...

    Hopeful broody

One of my hens started sitting longer in the nest. When she comes out, there is no new eggs. So she does not lay an egg, but just sits there. I would actually like her to try her hand at rearing chicks. Any way I can encourage her to sit? She does not sit 24x7 and goes on the roost at night.

I do have a still air incubator, just thought the more expensive one would be better. So, next time still air? These were pekin eggs.

    Complete failure incubating duck eggs

Out of 12 eggs zero ducklings! Last candling, three days before hatch date showed 4 live and moving ducklings. One tried to hatch, but died. Today is day 28 and no movement or peeping. I used Hova 1588 with the fan blowing all the time. Temp was around 99.5 and humidity at stable 70% for the...

How do you Mend a Broken Heart? ***Hello Katie***

It took me seven years to mend a broken heart after the death of my baby. And even after seven years I made a wrong decision. I bought a dog that resembled the dog that died. That was a mistake. A new dog will always be "not like" the old one, and the dead dog will always win. Although I love my...

    Care?

They would love some type of a "pool" to splash around. Plus that keeps them clean. The water from this pool can be used to water your garden, if you have one. Instant fertilizer. When I have young ones, here in Florida, I let them out with a small basin at a week old. They instantly love and...

Need your help guys! Injured duck not eating

We had a bobcat attack, he grabbed the duck by the neck, but dropped her when I ran out there. The duck survived, but is sitting in the pond all day and not eating. I saw her drinking water from the pond, so I know she can swallow. Not sure she is not eating because she cannot swallow dry food...
