    Dog attack!!

Oh, I'm so sorry! I don't have any medical advice about your hen, I just feel for you One of my dogs manages to kill about a hen a year. There is no doubt she would like to do it some more, but we just manage the whole situation carefully. Harder with a neighbor's dog. Hopefully they were...

Got my first "easter egg" today

Got my first easter egg yesterday too! The other young 'uns have been laying for a couple weeks, so I have been waiting in GREAT suspense for the little ladies to make their easter eggs. And here is the first one! I think I will make it my avatar.... Newchicksnducks, I didn't realize EEs...

    It Finally Happened!

Green egg! Here are yesterday's eggs...and, in pride of place, the first egg from the Ameraucanas! I am SO excited! Yesss! It's always a LITTLE funny to me, how exciting it is for everyone when chickens lay eggs... I could see there being tons of hubbub if they started laying Matchbox...

26 weeks old and still waiting!!!

Waiting for the first egg is SO SUSPENSEFUL...my adult hens have been laying for a year, but this summer I got some Easter Eggers and some Welsummers. Now I am once again on tenterhooks waiting for the new egg colors... A little bit of bad news though, hens lay more in the spring and summer...

    Which are your dirtiest birds??

Ugh, my Salmon Favorelle boys are SUPER-dirty looking. Two of them sleep on the floor--I don't know if they're not being allowed upstairs, or if they are lazy? Either way, it makes them dirty and bedraggled looking. And then all of them like to eat while laying down, so that's just more...

8 week olds put themselves to bed!

Hee hee! "Good job, chickens," I tell mine in a special pleased voice when I am pleased. Try it, they toooooootally care

    Here's a weird looking egg!

Craziest. Egg. EVER!!! Did they all watch a scary movie on Halloween?

Are my chickens going to STUPID themselves to death?

Ha, "stupid themselves to death"... I think the answer to that is a resounding yes. Yeah, just manually move them from the roosts to the coop at night. Once they get in the habit of sleeping in the coop, they will just start to go in there to sleep. It will take several repetitions to break...

    Dog breed quiz

Ugh, I tested as a Chihuahua. I don't think that's even a little accurate. I'm going with the test I took a couple years ago that said I was a German Shepherd. They got the pointy ears right I guess!

How many women do we have on BYC?

51! (surely there are more women on BYC than hens in my backyard...)

Dumbest thing youve heard someone say about chickens or Farm animals ?

These are funny! I've talked with a TON of people who think that you need a rooster to get eggs from the hens. A ton! Even people who grew up with chickens, which really surprised me...but I think these people all had hens and roos, so they just assumed that's how it worked. They didn't get...

Post Pics Of Your Chicken With Worst Molt

Here's a picture from a couple weeks ago: She lost even more feathers after this. There were only a couple left on her wings she just couldn't bear to part with...I'm assuming it was a sentimental attachment, as they weren't doing much for warmth or flight. Or beauty. But now it is a few...

Post Pics Of Your Chicken With Worst Molt

Ugh, one of my girls looks like a creepy Halloween chicken--she has skeleton-looking pinfeathers sticking out all over, with maybe seven real feathers, max. I took a picture last week but deleted it--it looked like chicken abuse! I think I will start a business making 'modesty sweaters' for...

    hen pecked

Hey Randall, Maybe you can get a gentler rooster from somewhere nearby? At my house, it's getting towards that time of year where excess roos that hatched under our hens or came in our straight run of chicks are getting....ah, surplus to requirements. Maybe someone near you has the same...

    managing multiple roosters?

I'll be interested in the replies on this too...it will soon be time to cull out the excess roosters from our summer's hatch/order. This is only my second year with chickens but I do know this from the first year: our RIR Roo underwent a HUGE change in personality when he got his crow! He...

Anybody else have Dark Brahma hens?

I have a (very) mixed flock--and my hands-down, no-contest favorite chicken is a Light Brahma hen. She likes me to hold her and scratch her neck. She snuggles into my arms and shuts her eyes. She is plump and nice to hold, and her feathers are very soft and beautiful. I told myself I wasn't...

My blue pullets.. :) (pic heavy!)

Whoa...your hens are beautiful!!! I love how each feather looks so distinct. Are they pretty tame?

How do I Tame Pet Chickens to be more Friendly?

Yes, with chickens as with people--the way to the heart can be thru the stomach. Treats treats treats! I have read that Wyandottes can vary a lot in temperament, from friendly to more standoffish. But no matter their individual temperaments, with consistent positive handling (treats! treats...

    brooding hen question

HOORAY! We moved the Wyandotte hen to the broody box last night, and put up extra boards and a blanket over it to make it very, very dark. She was mildly disturbed when we moved her but not agitated. And today she is still there sitting on her eggs! Hooray!! C'mon little chicken babies...
