I decided to just keep her cooped up in a smallish cage, 3 foot by 2 foot approximately and let it heal on it's own, no splint. She can straighten it out on her own and is putting some weight on it now. The last couple days I've been letting her out on the porch to get some exercise and...
I'm not sure it's just the foot, could be further up on her leg. But she seems to be able to move the leg while the foot just dangles. Thanks. I guess she'll be separated from the other chickens for a while, when I did try letting her out to mingle, they picked on her and now she acts like...
11 days ago I heard commotion, grabbed the rifle, ran outside and saw my hen, Miss Peewee, the only one with a name, being carried away in a coyote's mouth. Managed to shoot the coyote, my hen got away and scurried into the woods, but didn't see her again until 3 days later when she came...
Took me a while to go through this topic. And maybe I missed a couple things said, but don't give your chickens spent hops. And if for some reason you are adding hops to your mash, don't feed them that grain. Rarely do any recipes call for hops before the mash, so usually no worries...
It does look like intestines protruding, will try to get a picture, but they are all sleeping now, that one is not hard to miss when they are out and running around though. Been like that for a few days now.
One if my chicks has something growing out of it's butt, looks like some sort of tumor, like a reddish, black color. It's a leghorn. None of the others have this, kind of gross looking. Is he sick?
Mine seem content in this size right now. It's hard to see the rock in the middle because it's nearly the same color of the bedding. But in the third pic, the black chick in the middle is standing on it. They love their pecking mat. I sprinkled a little sand on it to keep them interested...
We had one very aggressive chick, at just days old, and others that were becoming aggressive. 8 chicks total in a big box.
1) We got the red light as soon as it started happening,
2) I started handling the aggressive ones, seems when I put them back, they were all mellowed out.
3) We...
He looks so small for 2 weeks old. As long as you are not under 5 years old, very elderly, or have a weakened immune system, it'll be fine. Just don't touch your face when handling and wash your hands after you put him back.
I keep having to pull the aggressive chick aside and play with him. He likes it when I type and starts trying to peck the keys. So, not sure what to type, just cute watching him trying to help. Hopefully he will learn to get along with the others instead of just trying to peck at them...
Here are the 3 black ones, they like to hang together and the tan/gold ones are now hanging on the other side near the water trough. Out of 24 eggs we got 5 tan/gold ones and 3 black ones.
Well, looking at pictures, they look exactly like barred rocks and nothing like the black and white australorps. I figured out how to post a picture so will be back with one. Will try to get a better pic of the blackies.
I was already thinking about a tiny skewer and an open flame. Just hung an old set of keys from a string, attached it to the infrared light. They immediately seemed interested. Pecking at the keys and the loose string hanging down. I will go look at breeds, try to figure out what we...
We have no idea what breed the black ones are. They are black with white hairs on their heads and wings. Bought them from a guy on craigslist and he told us they were all Rhode Island Reds. Probably I did just exhaust him, but so far, he still seems subdued. I asked Bill whether we should...
Yes, we have a red light. I did end up separating him for a short time, just carried him around and let him peck at my laptop, he seemed to really like the typing. When I put him back, he was very subdued. Not sure if I was supposed to do that but it seems to have worked. Maybe even the...
I wasn't concerned about leaping off the table because I had my laptop on the floor. No where to fall. I figured if I was laying on the floor with him, he'd be more comfortable, so just moved the laptop to the floor.
My hands are 98.6 degrees and my computer overheats, so figured it was okay to take it away from the heat for a while. He/she, the aggressive one trying to poke eyes out is subdued now. I guess it worked. I almost feel sorry for him. The others seem to be ostracizing him. I am new to...
Well, that answered my question too, an aggressive little baby. I grabbed him/her, separated from the group by carrying it around. Let it play on my laptop, pecking keys while I was typing. When I put him back after lots of handling, he/she was subdued.
