First time keeping hens with a run instead of free range - any relatively inexpensive options?

Hi, so I just recently moved cross country, and had to rehome my hens. They all got to go to a great home together, and now I'm getting ready to start over. I have a couple questions, though. I moved from Utah suburbs to a semi-rural town in North Carolina. In Utah, the chickens had a coop...

Chicken laws for Mount Airy, NC

Does anyone know what they are? I can't seem to find a solid answer other than "no livestock allowed if you have less than 10 acres, but chickens aren't defined as livestock". It's possible that I will be moving there, so I'd like to know if I can have chickens or not before a decision is...

    Do chicks count?

So here's the thing. We are at our max number of ducks allowed for in our zoning(sadly only 2 ), but I would like to let our broody Khaki Campbell hatch some ducklings. We would sell them when they were a little older(6-8 weeks old probably), but my question is, do chicks/ducklings count as...

Female duck with feathers fluffed, panting.

Duck seems to be doing poorly. She can walk and she did run away when I approached her, but she seems a bit wobbly and slow compared to her sister. 1) What type of bird, age and weight (does the chicken seem or feel lighter or thinner than the others.) 1 year old female duck, not underweight...

    Ducks won't enter water?

Well, they figured it out themselves. Before I got the chance to make them an improved ramp, they figured out how to use a straw bale that was on its side next to the trough to get in. Problem solved, thanks for all your suggestions!

    Ducks won't enter water?

Thanks! I have three pallets at my disposal, is there anything I could do with those or do I need to use something else? It is possible it was a hawk, although they are usually loose in my fenced yard and we have never had problems with predators.

    Ducks won't enter water?

So I have two ducks, and I recently got them a 100 gallon rubber trough for them to swim in. I found them in it once the day after I set it up. They had the time of their lives and eventually jumped out, preened and everything. All was going well. But they haven't been in since, and they...

Any cheap ideas for a duck pond?

Thanks! I think we're either going to go with kiddie pools or one of those rubber 100 gallon horse troughs.

Any cheap ideas for a duck pond?

Thanks! Getting them used is a good idea. They use the base part of one of these at the moment: http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-6T1IlxGTwo8/TjDHSOV3XaI/AAAAAAAAACI/w-MRNtozgfU/s1600/cage2.jpg

Any cheap ideas for a duck pond?

We have two ducks, and we'd like to get them something to swim in that's larger than what they have now, but we're on a budget and the only decent sized things we can find are hundreds of dollars, and most kiddie pools we've looked at wouldn't hold up to duck claws and beaks. Any ideas?

    Temporary rehoming?

That's a neat idea. I'll keep that in mind, it sounds like a nice option if needed.

    Temporary rehoming?

Thanks for replying. :) I realize it would be on a case-by-case basis, I was just curious if it's ever done.

    Temporary rehoming?

I wasn't quite sure where to put this, feel free to move it if needed. So recently, the possibility has arisen that we may need to move to an area that will only allow us 2 chickens. We have a flock of six. :( We all love these chickens to death, so I have been wondering if it is ever...

    Broody hen cure???

If I was going to do the water bottle thing, would she just move to another nest? Would my other 5 start laying outside the coop? I have a crate I can put her in if I have too.

    Broody hen cure???

So, I have my first broody hen. She is a Blue Laced Red Wyandotte/White Leghorn mix. Yep, she was the "oops" chick of the feed store, apparently. ;) Anyway, she went broody a couple weeks ago. After a week had passed, I started trying to snap her out of it, with little success. So far I...

    Orem exotic laws?

Hello all! I was wondering if anyone knows if it is legal to keep peahens in Orem, UT? I know that it is legal in UT in general, and it is not legal to keep peacocks but I am unsure about local laws on peahens, I can't seem to find anything in the city code. Thank you!

Very, VERY loud Button Quail! Help!

A few days after my last post he attacked the parakeet. Luckily, both birds are fine, but I separated the quail from the parakeet, and once the weather was warm enough, put them both outside. Things have been fine since.

    Zoning question about Inverness

Hello! We may be moving near Palatine, IL soon, and we would like to move somewhere with very chicken-friendly zoning. Is there any way to figure out the zoning for Inverness and other areas around there, without being a resident? Thanks!

Bumblefoot surgery - with pics and "how to"

Ahem...didn't need to see that right after dinner...:sick Useful info, though. And @Beefcake, I guess you would just watch for re-infection? Any experienced members want to verify that?

Very, VERY loud Button Quail! Help!

I'll try separating them. He does seem to be looking up at the parakeet when he's calling.
