    January 2024 hatch-a-long

Unfortunately I am well aware this baby hatched too early. And sadly it passed yesterday evening. Also unfortunately, it looks like the other eggs that showed signs of life all quit. 14 fertile eggs that developed to at least day 18, and the only one to hatch was a chick that wasn't ready yet...

    January 2024 hatch-a-long

So, good news/bad news: Good news: the chick I thought was going to hatch first hatched at about 5pm. We went from internal pip to unzipped in 24 hours. Egg was marked cuckoo. Bad news: the chick has the biggest umbilical hernia I have ever seen. I'm hoping that somehow it's all just egg and...

Is that the maticoopx? I'd love to hear your opinion on it if it is.

    January 2024 hatch-a-long

Day 20+16 hours update: I have an internal pip on the egg I was sure would be first! Four more eggs have movement, but the rest unfortunately look dead. This is the part I hate most about shipped eggs - you get right up to the finish line and then can have such a crappy hatch (With home-bred...

    January 2024 hatch-a-long

Well, it's officially the start of day 20 for my shipped eggs! 13 eggs in lockdown and I candled as I removed the turner (I turn through day 20), only 2 I suspect of being late quitters around day 17-18, one I have my eye on for being most likely to hatch "early", and the rest I wouldn't be...

    January 2024 hatch-a-long

Well, I'm day 16 for my shipped eggs hatch, and I've only had one quitter out of the 14 fertile so far. Everything else has nice movement and pretty equal development, so fingers crossed! Hatch date for those should be the 6/7th. I'm thinking of live-streaming the hatch on my TikTok? I also...

    January 2024 hatch-a-long

Looks good to me! I have NR360's and have a 3d-printed divider that on big hatches gives the eggs less floor-space-per-egg than this, and it all workd out fine! I'm excited to see the fluffies!

    Guess the franken-color?

Alrighty, so I have a color-development update for the light chick: We are about 9 weeks old, and he (and he's definitely a he, look at that crest coming in....) has started developing some gold on top of the Splash. I'm really intrigued to see how this one will mature, and I'm bummed I can't...

    January 2024 hatch-a-long

Firstly, Merry Christmas to all who celebrate (even the non-religious like me who just like to have a good excuse to make Loaded Baked-Potato "Salad")! Secondly, I have my January hatch Day 9 update: Day 7 confirmed the results of day 4. 9 eggs were infertile, 6 were fertile but red-ring, and...

    January 2024 hatch-a-long

Ok, so I held-off on candling until yesterday and again today (day 4). I'm using the built-in candler on the NR360 as my good candling flashlight is at the coop, and it's just not as strong so I'm having trouble with a few, but for the most part here are my numbers: 29 Eggs total: 14 fertile...

    January 2024 hatch-a-long

I'm thinking about being a lunatic and candling when I get home from work tonight. It's day two..... 🤣

    Guess the franken-color?

I was surprised too! I don't remember if the father did the same thing as a chick, but this baby is throwing me for a loop! Honestly, even though this baby only has four toes, I might keep it in my color project just because I'm so intrigued.

    January 2024 hatch-a-long

I have 29 Silkie eggs I set today, due to hatch January 6th. They're from another breeder, a mixed bag of colors - Blue, Black, Cuckoo, Lemon, Lemon Cuckoo, Mauve/Chocolate Cuckoo, Mottled, Paint, Splash, White, and a few mystery eggs.

    Guess the franken-color?

Both parents were cuckoo. The father's single-barred, and you can only see the barring in some of his tail and hackle feathers. So while it's very possible they might not be barred, the pigment inhibition suggests otherwise.

    Guess the franken-color?

Omg, I'm dying laughing at that description! I live in fear of what is lurking under the dominant white in Paints. And I agree that the white chick (there's only one, I just posted two pictures of each chick) somehow looks Splash. Don't ask me HOW genetically, because that's one headache I...

    Guess the franken-color?

Definitely! But why not have some fun and guess WHICH colors?!

    Guess the franken-color?

So, I have a pair of fertility-test babies from a oddball cuckoo Silkie pair that I've been playing the "what the heck color are THESE going to be?" game with. Mama is either black or blue cuckoo, although I'm leaning towards blue. Dad is...... Blue-Cream cuckoo? Lemon Blue cuckoo? Red Pyle...

Putting weight back on thin birds?

They are all in large cages for conditioning right now (hoping the problem children will also be in condition to show), so no competing for food, and everyone has a nice healthy appetite. So, hurry-up-and-wait it is! Thanks everyone!

Putting weight back on thin birds?

So I have had a hellacious time with mites in my Silkies this year, and unfortunately didn't catch the latest infestation until I lost a bird (I have since been obsessively treating with Ivermectin and Elector PSP, and I think I can mix permethrin premise spray in my sleep now). Most of my...
